Introduction
Softball star Lauren Regula faced a dilemma in the preparations for the 2020 Olympics, where she had to play again for Team Canada on the sport's biggest stage. Despite her retirement and the challenges of training and traveling, she was determined to win an Olympic medal. However, she faced negative conversations from her family, friends, and colleagues who questioned her ability to achieve her dream.
Lauren suffered from FOPO, or the fear of people's opinions, which almost cost her one last shot at her dream. FOPO is a hidden epidemic that can limit human potential and negatively impact all aspects of our lives. It can lead to losing faith in ourselves and performance, as it is part of human nature. However, if we are not careful, FOPO can take over the narrative in our minds, poisoning us. Instead of focusing on our own thoughts and feelings, we start obsessing about the thoughts and opinions of others, whether spoken or perceived. This obsession can affect our decisions, actions, and lives.
FOPO is part of the human condition because we operate with an ancient brain that craved social approval thousands of years ago. Today, with the proliferation of social media, intense pressure to succeed, and overreliance on external rewards, FOPO is rampant. FOPO can be seen in leaders not speaking up, CEOs valuing short-term shareholder gains over long-term company health, and politicians voting with their party instead of their conscience.
Changing our relationship with other people's opinions can help us become more free and at home with ourselves wherever we are.
FOPO (Fear of Perception) is a common issue in our lives, often leading to fear and conformity. We often play it safe and play it small, sacrificing authenticity for approval or belonging. This externalization of self-esteem
