How Understanding Others Starts with Understanding Yourself
The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.
William James
If you have ever watched an episode of Suits and liked Donna's uncanny ability to intuit her peers' emotions, motivations, and needs- considerably better than they could on their own – you probably know emotional intelligence matters. It is mission-critical.
Have you ever had that feeling or perceived that your friend needs a hug before they even say a word? Maybe you know somebody in your office whose anger and frustration erupt like a volcano. It will probably leave you dumbfounded, with no clue about what happened.
We are all acquainted with people who are pretty good listeners in our personal lives or at work. Regardless of your situation, they somehow seem to know precisely what to say – and how to express it – so that you aren't upset or offended.
These types of people are masters at managing their feelings and emotions. You will seldom find them getting angry or losing their composure in stressful situations. Instead, they're considerate and caring and have the innate ability to look at a complex problem and calmly come up with a solution.
No doubt, we all deal with challenging emotions and tricky situations. Yet some navigate them like Donna from Suits and trust their intuition. What about others? They may feel lost in the chaos. Individuals like Donna are excellent at making decisions and have high emotional intelligence.
What if you could be like Donna, sniffing out a nasty power play faster than anyone else? Her emotional intelligence and social perceptiveness aren't merely TV magic and should not be reduced to a TV trope. It's a set of skills broadly known as emotional intelligence, and you can learn it, too.
