Styleworthy is a platform for open and unapologetic conversations about style and self-expression among a diverse group of individuals in a safe and empowering space. Its purpose is to support and guide individuals on their journey towards self-love and self-acceptance.
As a first-generation Filipina-Canadian and the founder of a Canadian-owned business based in Mississauga, Jennifer Rabanillo noticed a lack of representation of Asians at the events she was producing and attending as a guest. She observed that these events and social media were filled with influencers who lacked diversity in their brand image and storytelling.
Jennifer recognized that this lack of authenticity and ‘realness’ at these events and on social media. How it can have a negative impact on individuals’ mental states, leading to self-doubt, body image issues, and confidence issues. To address this lack of diversity in the female empowerment and small business community, Jennifer decided to create a platform that humanizes these issues.
With the goal of creating a safe space for individuals to seek encouragement and direction, Jennifer opened a well-being and workshop studio where she will provide curated programming, customized small business support, and well-being services.
Through this holistic approach to mentoring others, she aims to empower individuals to achieve self-growth and success.
Jennifer strongly believes that the true measure of success is through engaging experiences and collaborations that inspire others.
She understands that a better sense of self reflects a better sense of style, and her goal is to help individuals to be their unedited version of themselves.
We are all worthy of our own personal life/style - You are Styleworthy
THE POWER OF SELF-LOVE
G ROWING UP WITH A TWIN, I often found myself constantly being compared to my shy, introvert twin sister, Christine. It was a challenge to establish my own sense of self and individuality at an early age, especially when it came to style as our mother dressed us in the same outfits. Fortunately, we are fraternal twins and have our unique features and personalities. This didn’t help with the comparison we had between our parents and family. We come from a large Filipino family, so no matter what we were doing through our formative times of your lives, we were not so silently judged (tsismis aka chismis – gossip
a commonality amongst the Filipino community). In our adult life, we are still compared to family members, even down to how each other’s dogs act.
Comparison is what started the journey of self-doubt. As I grew older, I began to understand that my personality was what helped me establish my own authenticity and sense of style.
In my most formative years of understanding oneself, I attended a high school where you had to wear a uniform for 3 years, which took away any creativity and self-expression.
Flowing up and down the hallways looking identical. Like, salmon trying to fight the current of the credit river, just trying to make it to the next class of mundane habitual behavior going to class being taught the same curriculum filled with male-centric reading lists – it was a challenge becoming your true authentic teenage self.
Self-love and confidence are crucial in creating a sense of style that truly represents who we are. When we love and accept ourselves, we can make choices that align with our values and personality, rather than trying to fit into a certain mold or societal expectation. This leads to a greater sense of authenticity and individuality in our fashion choices, which ultimately helps us to stand out and feel more confident in our appearance.
But self-love and confidence don’t come easily to everyone. It takes work and effort to understand and accept ourselves, and to learn to let go of the comparisons and societal expectations that hold us back. In this book, we will delve into the importance of self-love and confidence in creating a sense of style that is truly our own and explore practical tips and strategies for cultivating these qualities within ourselves.
So, whether you’re a twin like me, or simply someone looking to establish a sense of authenticity and individuality in your style, this book is for you. Let’s begin the journey towards self-love and confidence and discover the power of a truly authentic sense of style.
UNAPOLOGETIC CONVERSATIONS AND
UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY
G ROWING UP IN MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO; known for its multiculturalism I was surrounded by a diverse group of individuals. However, despite this diversity, there were still cliques of cultures that formed in my high school. These cliques didn’t allow for much interaction or understanding amongst different cultures, and as a Filipina, I thought that the Filipino community would embrace me like my family did. However, this turned out to be an issue throughout high sc hool.
My parents moved here in the 70s, and my sister and I are first generation, Canadian Filipinas. My sister and I understand the Tagalog language fluently however, we don’t speak it. A banana as they used to say, yellow on the outside, white on the inside.
This was the start of my journey to understanding that even if a community has the same culture and values, it doesn’t mean that we must stick together. I began to create a community outside of what I thought I was supposed to do, and this helped me understand that by
