About this ebook

Do you wish you could journal?

Your friends love the practice, but it never works for you. You're uncertain how to start. Should you choose an aesthetic? Fancy fonts and decoration seem like too much hassle.

You CAN journal: do it your way

Although I journal every day, it took me years to develop a consistent habit. Often I talked myself out of it. I convinced myself that even ten minutes of writing was a "waste of time." Somehow I squared that with scrolling through social media for half an hour at a stretch—obviously, I was adept at lying to myself.

Writing has power, but do it your way; there aren't any rules. Use fancy notebooks or text files... And you'll subtly change, without struggle. Find yourself becoming more positive and confident.

You don't need any prompts or exercises, but you will find some in this book.

Discover unique (and easy) ways to journal

I'm a writer. For me, journals are a powerful tool. But it doesn't matter what your occupation happens to be, this book can help you to get more out of your life.

You'll discover how to:

  • Develop a practice, even in five minutes a day.
  • Set goals and achieve them without stress.
  • Boost your mood anytime you need it.
  • Develop your intuition, even if you've been happily ignoring it for years.

Start a fun adventure today: journal.

Introduction: be present for your life

Want to journal, but aren't sure how to start?

    This book will help.

Although I journal every day, it took me years to develop a consistent journaling habit. Often I talked myself out of it. I convinced myself that even ten minutes of journaling was a waste of time. Somehow I squared that with scrolling through social media for half an hour at a stretch—obviously, I was adept at lying to myself.

It took a couple of decades, but eventually I realized that my life was just better when I journaled. Not only was I more productive and relaxed, I was happier.

    WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE?

Believe it or not, a journal can help.

A journal can be pretty much what you want it to be. It has the power to change you mentally and emotionally, and can help you to make sense of your life.

To achieve these magical changes, painlessly, all you need to do is write. Or doodle. Or chat (yes, you can create an audio or video journal if you wish.)

My theory on how a journal leads to happy changes is simple.

A journal ensures that you're present for your life. You spend less time kicking yourself for errors in your past and worrying about the future.

Presence is a wonderful gift. Moreover, it's a teaching that's thousands of years old. The world's great spiritual movements such as Christianity and Buddhism teach presence. However, presence is incredibly difficult to achieve. I see it as awareness, without thought.

We're all caught up in a constant wash of thoughts and emotions. When these emotions become stormy they toss us about like a tiny ship on a vast ocean. We lose our balance and sense of control.

A journal can help you to become aware of the thoughts which flow through your mind, seeing them as thoughts, and letting them go. The day you recognize a negative thought as just a negative thought, is a wonderful day.

Slowly, your journal helps you to realize that your thoughts are not you. Your constant flow of mental chatter doesn't have any special significance. It's just what your mind does: it chatters, and tells stories. And once you recognize this, via your journal, you'll become more intrigued by the present moment.

You'll discover the magic of the present moment. That's invaluable, because the present is where your power lies. It gives you the ability to act, and to change.

YOUR POWER IS IN THE PRESENT MOMENT

Be Here Now is the title of a classic book by Ram Dass, the Harvard professor who inspired Steve Jobs. Since its publication in 1971, this book has been continuously in print. Today, we find its message in movements such as mindfulness.

Although we pay lip service to presence and mindfulness, in practice they're far from easy; at times they can seem impossible to achieve.

When you begin a journaling practice, you'll become aware that we spend a lot of time fantasizing. Not only about the future, but also the past. I've often thought that I'd like someone to use a Zen master's encouragement stick on me whenever I lapse into discursive thinking.

For me, my journal performs that function. It's the stick that wakes me up.

    You might be wondering…

Who journals? Journaling has become trendy.

    WHO JOURNALS?

Today, you’ll find aesthetically pleasing diaries and journals on YouTube, Instagram, and other social media sites.

    However, for many centuries, journaling
