I’m a forty-year-old ex-Navy Seal with a hole in my heart.

I’m ready to settle down. I’m getting old, and although I still have the muscular physique of a guy in his twenties, I can feel that middle-age creeping up into my bones. I’ve got a big heart, and years of service didn’t do anything to blunt its sweetness. But I’ve got no one to share it with.

And I wish more than anything that I did.

I need to find a mate. I need to find the woman of my dreams. But now I’m starting to think she doesn’t exist. Maybe she never did. I take a deep breath, sip my coffee, and stare out onto the peaceful farm below my front porch. I built this big house ten years ago, but thanks to years of service, I’ve hardly been able to spend any time in it.

But now I’ve got all the time in the world. Now I’m a retired guy with plenty of cash in the bank, thanks to good investments made five years ago, plus an apartment complex I own downtown. But at the same time, I knew that I wanted to serve my country, and it seemed like some special new mission kept popping up every six months; some new covert operation.
