    Chapter One - Vince

I’ve been a firefighter for fourteen years now, and I’ve given up on finding my true love.

Until the moment I rescue her.

The call comes in just like any other. Burning apartment complex which happens to be five minutes from the station. The boys and I quickly suit up and jump into the truck, and off we go towards the rising smoke in the otherwise crystal-clear sky.

We arrive at the apartment complex and building 2 is engulfed in flames. Christ. This looks like a bad one. A really bad one.

Everybody got out except for one, screams an elderly woman staring in horror from the sidewalk. Beth - she’s still in there! She’s in number 12.

The place is completely enveloped in brightly orange flames. The blackened smoke rises above them. I’m not feeling too hopeful today. And my men look hesitant to even attempt to get in there – but like always, they do their best.

I can’t find a clear path – every damn thing’s on fire! Shouts Desmond.

Out of the way, I say, brushing past him and the others and quickly running into the entrance of the building.

They must be looking at me like I’m crazy. And truth be told, maybe I am. But I’m not afraid to try and save a life in a desperate, dangerous situation like this. I’ll sacrifice myself to save another. Because I’ve got nothing to live for. Because I’m alone, and I know I always will be.

The lobby is burning all around me. Even the red carpeted floor is on fire. I rush up the steps and pass the numbered doors until I reach twelve. The smoke is so damn thick that it’s managing to get into my mask, and it’s making it hard to breathe.

I try the doorknob and it’s locked. Damn. This isn’t looking good. Beth might not be the only person to die in here this morning. I might wind up burnt to a crisp as well.

I pull the axe off my back and slam it into the door three times, busting through the plywood and then reaching through and unlocking it. Then I rush into the interior of the room and hear screams coming from the bathroom.

I’m here to help you, I bellow through the squealing flames.

I jump over a burning loveseat and grab ahold of the bathroom door, twisting it open and bursting into the room which is devoid of flames but full of thick, ugly smoke. There’s a woman coughing and choking, trying to open the window, but it’s stuck. I glance back for a split second and see the flames rising in the living room by the door.

There’s no way out of here. No way except for the stuck window.

I take my axe and ram it against the glass, shattering it onto the street below us. Then, without a word, I grab the woman and hoist her up into my arms, lifting
