I’m a lumberjack who’s given up on finding my mate. I’ve almost come to realize that she simply doesn’t exist. I know there’s a girl out there for me, but I’m convinced at this point that she only exists in my dreams. I’ve seen her face on many nights, but in my dreams it’s always hazy. But when she appears, it’s always the happiest time of my life – and when I wake up, the cold feeling of a sinking depression kicks in when I realize she’s not real.

I’m thirty-six years old, and I know it’s time for me to settle down and start a family. Instead, I’ve decided to settle down by myself, and spend the long nights and days alone, except when I’m on a job with my crew of twelve men. I’m the owner of a logging company, and I run the show when we’re out in the woods hauling logs and cutting them up. It’s hard work, but it’s honest work, and I make a good living as the owner of the company.

I’ve saved so much money over the last decade that I don’t know what the hell to do with it. I wish I had someone to share it with, but I’ve given up on finding anybody. I’ve gone on dates, but they lead to nowhere. I’m just never convinced that the woman is a good match for me... Maybe I’m too picky, but I don’t think it’s that – call me a hopeless romantic, but I just don’t feel any connection with any of the girls I meet. Because none of them compare to her.

How crazy do I sound? I know it’s nuts to be thinking this way. I should just pick the next girl who comes my way and tell her she’s the one. But I can’t do that, because it wouldn’t be the truth, and I’m a man who believes honesty is an important value to have. And so, I stay single, sleeping in my king-sized bed at night, dreaming of a girl who doesn’t exist.

I’m on the job now, just finishing up, and I’m absolutely starving. I say goodbye to the boys and walk over to my truck, hop inside and fire up the engine. I figure I’ll head to my usual restaurant – the burger joint on the other side of town. It’s a bit of a drive from here, and out the way from my house, but the juicy double cheeseburgers make it worth the trip.

I head down the road and turn on some oldies. The sad feeling comes back – the one that always seems to come back when I leave the company of my employees. I don’t mind being alone in general, but when I’ve been alone for so many years and have no one to see when I go home, it starts to wear on me. It’s like I’ve got nothing to look forward to except work.

But I’ve got to stay strong. I’m an alpha male whose heart has all but turned to ice, and I’ve got to get used to this feeling. I can’t be going soft now. It’s too late for that.

When I get to the restaurant, I walk inside and sit at the back corner like I always do. It’s a small town, so not many people are here, especially because it’s later in the evening. I expect the usual waiter to come and take my order, but when a girl I’ve never seen walks up and greets me with a perky smile, I’m left speechless.
