The phone rang around three o’clock. I had just finished with my afternoon appointment, eaten a late lunch, and gone back out to sit at the front desk of my gym. I picked it up.

Lance’s Fitness Training, Lance speaking.

Hi, I was wondering if you had any openings this week.

One moment please, I said, pulling out my cell phone and looking at my calendar. Just so happens I can fit you in tomorrow anytime, I said, noticing my empty schedule. I was typically booked to the limit but I’d coincidentally had three cancellations for tomorrow.

Oh, that would be perfect, she said, and I could practically hear her smiling.

First, tell me a little about yourself. Name, fitness goals, fitness experience.

I’m Amber, she said, then paused. Experience?

Gym wise – I mean, have you lifted or done much cardio before? Do you have experience with exercise?

She chuckled a little. Even her laugh made me perk up. She sounded so cute. Oh, no. Nothing really – I mean, I ran on the treadmill a few times, but other than that nothing. I haven’t lifted weights. I just want to get in shape, I guess.

Got it. No problem right there, I said, scribbling down my notes. We’ll talk about this more in depth tomorrow.

Thank you. So, tomorrow at ten thirty is good?

Perfect. I’ll see you then, Amber.

I hung up the phone, not thinking that much about it. I thought it was just going to be another client. A client who happened to have a nice laugh. But I was in for a wild ride the next day. Because I was going to meet someone who was going to change my life forever.

I used to think I’d be alone forever. That was before I met Amber.
