LIVE YOUR LIFE, DIE YOUR DEATH

A story from the series of Suspicious Tales and Psychological Shorts

    By Martha Henley

    Valentine’s day. It’s the shits isn’t it?

Why am I here, listening to this dribble. Look at him. He’s not even that cute. Across the table from me is the best I could do? He works in retail. And not even at the popular mall. What store did he say worked for again?

You don’t have to buy dessert. Really. I don’t need— And here it is. Double chocolate lava cake. I hate chocolate. Thank you. It tops the evening. I smile and hope he believes what I say. It’s vital that he sticks around for the rest of the evening.

The cool night air feels refreshing on my face and hands. It was burning in the stuffy restaurant. Do you mind if we walk? I ask when he heads to his parked car. I saw the perfect hotel up ahead. Looked as if it needed a bit of refurbishing, but it had plenty of stories and balconies. I’ll never stay in a place without a balcony again.

Any place in particular you want to go? he asks, wrapping his arm around my waist. The alcohol on his breath is strong, but he’s not intoxicated.

I have an idea. It is Valentine’s day. I motion to the hotel a block away and give him an irresistible look. Dare to think with your heart?

Not at all. He leads the way and we’re silent, contemplating the others compatibility as we stroll in the city lights that over shadow the moonlight.

Lovers, he says, commenting on a couple entering the hotel ahead of us. They’re wearing sickeningly sweet matching red outfits. Her dress is cute, but his suit is a hideous shade.

Are you sure about this? he asks, handing his credit card over to the lobby attendant behind the counter. We just met, he whispers close to my ear so that the curious attendant can’t hear.

I’m sure that I don’t want to be alone on Valentine’s Day. I give him a kiss on the neck. To further convince him of my willingness to the evening, I let my hand slip down his ass, between his thighs, and I tickle the back of his balls. Don’t you want to be with me tonight?

    Your card. The attendant interrupts.

We straighten up and act like the sexual tension has gone for a moment. It hasn’t. All I can think about is devouring him. I wet my lips and go in for another bite on his neck. He flinches and pulls me away toward the elevator.

Do you believe in fate? he foolishly asks.

What kind of stupid question is that? Fate? No one knows their fate. He certainly has no idea what his is. And he doesn’t need to be adding me to it.

Do you believe we have a future after tonight?
