    PREFACE

    Dear Reader,

    It is with great pleasure and deepest gratitude that I present to you the fourth book in the ‘Mind It’ series. The three previous books: Mind it... You don’t have to be a Swamiji, Mind it... Realizations and Solutions - Blanking the (Thinking) Worries, and ‘It’s Only Mind’, have met with tremendous success. On popular demand and for wider outreach, these books were translated into Tamil and Hindi languages and were well received.

    I was pleased and honored to be presented the award for being one of the ‘Top 50 Impactful Authors of 2022’ by Critic space Literary Journal. Another joyous achievement was the ‘It’s Only Mind’ book was nominated to receive an award in the category of Mind Transformation, by the Golden Book Awards, 2023.

    While the earlier books in this series were in question and answer format, we have tried a new approach in this book to consolidate answers to various questions into specific subjects or topics, as asked by people in various forums. Each chapter of this book deals with a particular topic, subject, or emotion that creates challenges in people’s lives. While the name of the chapter is self-explanatory, there are some key contents of each chapter summarized at the start of every chapter. The key contents will give you a high level view of what the chapter will cover. You can choose to read this book end to end or topic wise based on your need and find the answers you have been looking for.

    My key learning through my own life experiences is that life is all about thoughts and the state of our mind. Learning to understand the nature of our mind and to control one’s thoughts is key to achieving an undisturbed mind. A regular and consistent practice of kriyas and meditation is the steady path that can help anyone achieve a controlled and calm mind. A calm mind can help us lead an ethical, happy, and successful life.

    People must be taught these practices at a young age itself to help focus and succeed early in life in studies, work, relationships, and every aspect of life. These practices help people find true purpose and a sense of fulfilment in their actions in the world. We do not live with a feeling of purposelessness or regret once we have mastered our thoughts and mind. Getting focused in whatever we do while not developing unnecessary thoughts are the most important realizations one must have while steering through life’s distractions. Mastering these two things can lead to guaranteed peace of mind. The use of certain techniques such as the ‘blanking the unnecessary thoughts’ can help anyone drop their thoughts and attain a calm mind irrespective of any adversity or challenge that they might be facing in life.

    We must recognize that the essence of human life is expectations, desires, and emotions. Every human mind is triggered into action through expectations and desires. We think that fulfilling our ambitions, goals, and desires will make us happy in life. We have defined success in terms of money, popularity, and power. Our need for comfort and conveniences keep adding more desires, and we add greater anxiety, expectations, and irritations in our life. In the process of making ourselves happy by achieving these ambitions, goals, and desires, we have laid extra focus on success and seem to have lost our innate sense of joy, peace, and calm.

    This book contains an understanding of the nature of the mind, thoughts, and emotions. This book shares some easy and practical tips to attain success without getting stressed, keeping our emotions calm, and living life in an effective manner. It shares how we can create a right mindset when it comes to desires and expectations, what understandings and realizations we need to reach, what changes we need to make in our mind, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions, how we can nurture and heal relationships and achieve our goals through an experience of deeper stillness and peace. It contains simple and practical truths and practices that can help us return to a calm and undisturbed mind from where right action is possible with deeper clarity and conviction.

    I hope you enjoy the read!

    Best Wishes

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    The author, A.T. Rajkumar, realized early in his life that the ultimate thing people want in life is a calm mind, irrespective of anything. He was afflicted with depression for some time at the age of 18. This made him lose a few precious years of his teenage life. However, this phase of his life made him turn to spirituality for solutions.

    Spirituality helped him overcome his struggle with depression. It helped him lead a successful life with a positive attitude. He attended different teacher’s classes and practiced Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s meditation techniques to help him out of depression, find satisfaction, and attain peace of mind.

    He has tried to live his life till date true to his practices and learnings while fulfilling his worldly desires, responsibilities, and passions. He made it his mission to share what he learned with everyone who was willing to receive. He was prepared to compromise his regular business and start focusing on teaching about how to achieve a calm mind.

    His key learnings are that life is all about thoughts. Learning to control one’s thoughts is the most important thing to achieve an undisturbed mind. He believes that living a spiritual life is not a religious practice; it is the practice of meditation as a mind exercise. He emphasizes that the practice of kriyas and meditation regularly can help anyone achieve a controlled and calm mind. A calm mind can give rise to an ethical, happy, and successful life.

    He urges people to take up these practices consistently, at a young age itself to help focus and succeed in studies, work, relationships, and every aspect of life. He firmly believes that getting focused in whatever you do while not developing unnecessary thoughts are the most important realizations one must have. Mastering these two things can lead to guaranteed peace of mind. He has devised a radical technique of ‘blanking the unnecessary thoughts’ that helps anyone drop their thoughts and attain a calm mind irrespective of anything that might be happening in their lives.

    A.T. Rajkumar has shared his teachings in 3 earlier books in the Mind It series that are available in the market today. These books are immensely popular, and well received by a wide audience. Through these books, he has tried to share his understandings, realizations, and techniques. The answers provided in these books are based on questions received from people who are facing challenges and problems in life and want to solve these issues, realize their thoughts, their mind, and start living life to their fullest potential.

    Raj Kumar is eternally grateful to be blessed with an excellent wife, beautiful children, amazing parents, loving brothers, sisters, and fantastic friends. He loves listening to songs and has a flair for singing. He also enjoys sports like tennis and chess.

    KNOWING OUR MIND AND THOUGHTS

    1. Nature of our mind and thoughts

    * Stress - how it is created in the body, how it affects us

    * Thoughts - the greatest distraction

    * Emotional and Rational mind

    * Nature of thoughts and emotions

    * To act or not to act

    * Conscious and Subconscious mind

    * Positive and Negative thoughts

    * Thinking about the past and letting go

    * Cultivating a calm and effective mind

    Every part of our human body works effectively when the mind is calm. Otherwise, when the mind is stressed, it makes the brain think only about an issue that is bothersome and gives minimum focus to other things. This leads to stress.

    Stress is induced in each cell of our immune system due to this overthinking making it ineffective in functioning fully. When in stress, sometimes you don’t feel like eating or exercising, at other times you over eat to satisfy the sensory organs and forget the stress. This leads to an unhealthy system and the immune system gets affected. The immune system works effectively only when every part of the body and mind function to their fullest. Even sleep comes perfectly only when one becomes tired after being fully occupied with our tasks.

    This means that the mind must work effectively and calmly to ensure that we live a healthy and happy life. The medicine to heal us is inbuilt in our body-mind system. But human tendency is to fear when some issues or problems bother us. Fear is a thought which induces overthinking. The more you think and fear about something bad happening to you, the more likely it is to happen. The law of attraction works here. It weakens your immune system and obviously affects your mind and hence your body. You will fall ill mentally and physically thereafter.

    It is the fear and worry based thoughts that cause this stress and imbalance. The best and the most intuitive thing to do then, is to stop the overthinking and relax the mind. It is best to blank these thoughts instead of developing it. Develop the art of focusing on the tasks at hand and getting rid of unnecessary negative thoughts. This can solve your issues without your incessant and unnecessary thinking. Whenever the unnecessary thoughts come, just go on blanking it and at some point, it goes away from your mind...

    Knowing this, we also understand that the greatest distraction in our life is our own thoughts. Our thoughts run towards various things based on our desires and sensory pleasures. This creates distraction in terms of not being present to things at hand or avoiding some important things. To do anything effectively or successfully, we need to be focused. Distraction and confused thoughts towards various things makes our mind ineffective and our life unsuccessful.

    Humans have an emotional mind; we have it naturally without even an effort. We are driven by emotions easily and act from them. Humans, by nature wants to get things easily. Unless a drastic, negative happening affects them, they do not change or think about change. Only after such an event does the mind starts to think about why it happened and the necessity to make it not happen again. At this point, there is a necessity for rational thinking. We then need to try and give it deep thought. Emotional mind is the default mind while the rational mind can be achieved only by effort. Most humans want to retain an emotional mind because it is the easy thing to do.

    Usually, when a situation is emotional, one is tempted to say or do something or make some commitments. It can lead to good and bad consequences. Learning to keep quiet, without reaction through words is very difficult for most minds. For example, an emotional situation has come up where some help is required. We mostly like to jump in and help without thinking too much. If we pause, we might know that it is not right to help, though the situation is emotional. But only those who are emotionally strong can keep quiet.

    You may be even criticized for not helping. Rather than acting by default on emotions and then making it an issue, it is good to keep quiet and not create suffering in certain situations. We mostly cannot say ‘No’ bluntly. But we can learn to pause and use the words ‘give me sometime’ to escape from the crucial pressure to react at an emotional time. It is good to develop this pause and wait for things to be a bit calm. This will give you the ability to say ‘No’ slowly. It’s better to allow the disappointment for others rather than facing a worse experience for both later. They may be unhappy for some time, but will get used to it over a period and become normal with you.

    It should be our endeavor to create a logical and rational mind that understands facts and faces situations depending on the person, situation, and emotions. However, it is also good to remember that a logical mind may sometimes lead to overthinking, while an enlightened mind stops overthinking at some point, takes decisions, and implements it immediately.

    An example to understand this distinction is, Let us say that you are on the way to strike a deal with some company and get big business. On the way, you see an accident victim struggling for life. No vehicle is around to take him to hospital. If you use your logical mind, you need to go ahead, so that you can get a contract worth a crore and become richer, but you will suffer the guilt of not saving a life. Sometimes, this guilt may
