Korea's busiest crossroads is in Seoul's district of Gangnam, near Sinsa Station. The subway is the best way to get to Sinsa Station, but finding the Cheonggu Building near Exit 1 can be challenging. The building is located 568 meters away from the KakaoMap app, but it is difficult to tell from the map that it is near the end of a steep incline or requires several pivots. Jung Hoseok, who would later become BTS' j-hope, was at a loss when he moved into the Big Hit Entertainment trainee dormitory near the Cheonggu Building in Seoul. He was scared, as he had never ridden the Seoul subway or experienced Christmas Eve in trendy Sinsa-dong.
Despite his initial frustration, he called the head of A&R and eventually arrived at the dormitory. Upon entering, he was surprised to find SUGA in his underwear, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Seoul.
Big Hit Entertainment
In November, Min Yoongi, who would later become SUGA of BTS, arrived in Seoul at the age of seventeen to work as a paid songwriter in Daegu. He had attended music hagwons to learn MIDI and was introduced to composers, but his prospects outside of Seoul were slim. SUGA and j-hope had deliberately made the decision to enter the idol audition process before joining Big Hit Entertainment as trainees.
As Korean idol groups became explosively popular in the 2000s, teenagers aspiring to stardom flocked to famous dance hagwons that taught dance and introduced promising students to entertainment companies in Seoul. J-hope's initial training was outsourced to Gwangju before he entered the dorm in Seoul. Big Hit Entertainment, established in 2005, was already a well-respected company with a stable of successful artists and the owner and main producer known for his ability to consistently crank out hits.
The making of a K-pop idol group is like the production of a Hollywood blockbuster, with everything converged into a single effort. Most popular groups in a decade could be considered successful, but only about five boy groups and five girl groups could be considered successful. Big Hit Entertainment, with its stable of successful artists and co-label JYP Entertainment, led the effort from training to launch.
The process of casting, training, and launching was a whole new venture for Big Hit Entertainment. Idol groups need simultaneous mastery of song and dance on stage, and all that singing and dancing need to be trained into them. For those, like SUGA and j-hope, who moved away from home or whoever shows high potential and is considered closer to debuting, room and board need to be provided.
J-hope was taken aback by what he saw when he first entered the dorm. Big Hit Entertainment was a major company in the entertainment industry, one that a budding artist like j-hope could trust to nurture their talent. In some ways, the company was arguably closer to being a kind of start-up, with administrative offices and recording studios in cramped quarters on the second floor. In 2013, Big Hit had a disproportionate abundance of people, including 15 male trainees competing to become BTS and 20 trainees competing to join Glam. The company also had producers Bang SiHyuk, Pdogg, and Son Sungdeuk.
However, for the two teenagers who arrived in Seoul, the presence of other teens with similar interests made a big impression. The studios were only sufficient for their basic functions, and the company's size may have been lacking compared to the big three.
Rap Den
RM, who would later become the leader of BTS, spent his teens in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province, a well-planned city with green spaces and a peaceful environment. The city's proximity to
