    Chapter 1

There was a time when superheroes were born, parents blessed with super powers produced children with powers of their own. Different abilities maybe, but they still grew up to live in a caste above the average human. Of course being superior in some way wasn’t always a blessing, after all, when humanity faced mortal danger no one called on Average Joe from the street to race to the rescue… They called for the heroes. They may have been adored and worshipped, but in all honesty they also faced a great deal of crap on a daily basis.

    But times were changing!

When the Supers first appeared mankind had only just mastered hitting each other with wooden clubs, and so those gifted ones sat back and watched over humanity as it slowly evolved. That evolution was slow, the time-scale between the first wheel and the first engine had been centuries, and before that many millennia had elapsed before intelligence had grown to the point where the wheel had been discovered. But suddenly the world kicked into overdrive, from the first engine it was really only a handful of decades before rockets were breaking free of the atmosphere, probes shot off into deep space exploring. Technology had arrived, and those at the forefront became wealthy beyond even the wildest of dreams.

But for some their dreams still managed to be larger than their bank accounts, and that was the case for Brandon Barton. Here was a man with unimaginable wealth. At the age of just twenty-five he was creeping onto the world’s wealthiest lists, five years later and he was in the top ten, and at the age of thirty-six he was in the top three. Who of the three was the richest wasn’t disclosed, but just being in one of the top slots told the average working man that there was more money squirrelled away than they could earn in a million lifetimes.

Brandon owned chemical companies, semiconductor plants, civil and military manufacturing facilities, he had even begun to dabble in the Final Frontier himself with an experimental rocket development arm to one of his defence companies.

From his childhood he had been fascinated by the Supers, his mind filled with questions… who were they really? Where did they come from? Were they even human? DNA tests suggested that they were from this planet. A few suggested that they were mutations, that maybe radiation had in some way set them on a different evolutionary path. If that were the case then people began to imagine that there was a super hero gene buried deep in everyone, it just had to be switched on at a molecular level.

Many were researching that possibility, including Brandon. He had the cash to fund a million theories, and DNA research was his joint favourite. His other obsession had been, if you weren’t born a super hero then maybe with the use of advanced technology you could make yourself one. It wasn’t such a farfetched idea, he already had a facility manufacturing humanoid style heavy lifting robots. These were similar to a huge exoskeleton that the operator stood inside. It was a robot with arms and legs that the driver literally strapped on. Inside that skeleton it was possible to
