    Chapter 1

    Life begins at forty.

That’s what Claire had been told but she’d passed that milestone several months before and she really couldn’t see anything getting any better. In fact, I think that it’s actually getting worse she told herself as she cast a disinterested eye across the gathered dignitaries.

For a start, in the early years there were far fewer events like this she thought. She’d been dragged to yet another fund-raiser, for what cause she really couldn’t say, just a glance at the banner above the stage could have told her but Claire really didn’t care. Her hand strayed toward her glass, she made a conscious effort to resist, alcohol wasn’t the solution to her woes. She’d succumbed once before, at a similar event and Jordan, her husband, hadn’t spoken to her for a whole week.

How could she embarrass him like that, in front of important and influential people? What he’d been really saying was that getting tipsy had reflected badly on him, especially as he’d been at a delicate stage of negotiations with a government agency that could issue a contract that would double or triple his already considerable wealth.

I wasn’t that bad she told herself as she concealed a small grin, so she’d knocked over a full punch bowl before tripping over a chair, landing on her back with her legs up, her dress suddenly deciding to give every onlooker a quick flash of very brief lace panties.

Damn, I think he would have killed me right at that moment. His eyes had told the full story of his anger as he feigned concern, helping her to her feet while giving her a stare that would cut through stainless steel.

Jordan had brushed the mishap aside with a smile as he returned to his conversation, explaining that his wife was on strong medication and hadn’t realised that there was alcohol in the punch.

Her mind returned to the present as a sense of mild curiosity drove her to discover the reason that she was there. A new wing for the local hospital. Yeah, I remember him mentioning something like that, not that he gives a shit about the cause. She thought sourly. It’s all public relations, a PR stunt, the CEO of one of the country’s leading pharmaceutical companies stepping in with a donation, but more importantly lending his name and reputation to give the fund-raisers a little more leverage. And he gets to look like a saint again, if only people knew what a monster he is in reality.

She’d overheard a conversation, just over a year ago now she reminded herself, with a senior member of his team. Claire hadn’t intended to listen but then he had raised his voice as he snapped, I want to control, not cure. Curing the condition is financial suicide. We are in the business of prolonging life whilst protecting our interests. A drug that controls a condition and has to be taken for the rest of the patient’s natural life is the goal… not a one-shot wonder cure that will drive us to the poor house.

But think of the ethical implications? the beleaguered man had whimpered.

Fuck ethics, Jordan had growled, You’ll find them very difficult to spend when the bank are hounding you for mortgage repayments you can no longer afford.

The poor man had not lasted long within the company after that confrontation, and Claire had felt sickened to her core when she realised that her husband was keeping people sick just to maintain his profit margin.

She’d been drifting out of love for a long time, but that was the final straw. Not that she ever said anything about what she’d heard, she simply continued to play the dutiful wife, while every day her depression deepened.

And this isn’t a case of just feeling a bit down she thought as she gave in to temptation and took a sip of her vodka and tonic, I think this is actual clinical depression creeping up on me… but what do I do about it?

She’d considered divorce, but on what grounds? She couldn’t site being vaguely pissed
