    What Are Chakras and Why Do They Matter?

    Chakras are pools of concentrated energy that serve as the body’s energetic centers. The Sanskrit word chakra translates to wheel or disk. Chakras are made up of light energy that spins both clockwise and counterclockwise. The primary energetic centers run along the spine and serve as a link between the physical, emotional, and spiritual or energetic bodies.

    Chakras, when open and balanced, are in charge of incorporating, absorbing, and emitting energy to keep all of the components of the body, mind, and spirit functioning at the optimal frequency and level.

    Chakras are an Indian concept that was discovered in Sanskrit documents dating back to 1500 BCE. The Vedas were the name given to this text. The chakras were traditionally an eastern philosophical concept related to energy and spirituality. For centuries, the Aryan people passed down oral traditions about chakras, as well as instructions on how to balance them.

    Western authors, healers, and spiritual practitioners have recently embraced the concept of chakras and begun to raise awareness about them. Fortunately, these authors and healers have made knowledge of those ancient texts and traditions more widely available. With this increased awareness comes a growing interest in understanding chakras, charka energy, and how they can be balanced for improved health and wellness.

    A chakra is a spinning wheel or disk of energy that runs along the spine of the human body. The chakras along the spine are considered the seven main chakras, but there are numerous sub-chakras throughout the body. According to some sources, there are as many as a hundred and fourteen chakras throughout the body, but this book will primarily focus on the seven main chakras.

    A chakra is directly related to an individual’s physical health and wellness, mental health, and emotional wellness. There are numerous ways to promote chakra health. Reiki energy healing, crystal healing, yoga, and meditation are just a few of the topics covered in this book.

    Chakras are three-dimensional, cone-shaped energetic bodies. The cone’s apex, or point, is what connects to the spine. The chakra cone then spreads from the spine to the front and back of the body, forming a cone in both directions. The crown chakra at the top of the head and the root chakra at the base of the spine are the exceptions. Both the crown and root chakras are cone-shaped, but the crown chakra emerges from the top of the head and the root chakra emerges from the base of the spine. These two chakras only open in one direction rather than two.

    The significance of chakras extends deep into the body’s overall functioning. Organs, hormones, organ systems, the immune system, and emotions are all regulated by chakras. Each of the seven major chakras is associated with a different color, a different part of the physical body, a different hormone, a different emotion, and different aspects of self and personal power. Because chakras are made up of energy, they each have their own energetic vibration and frequency. This frequency must be balanced and maintained in order to achieve complete holistic health of the body, mind, and spirit.

    When a chakra is out of balance, energy can become blocked or overactive. When this occurs, the body exhibits physical symptoms, psychological and mental disruptions, and emotional confusion. These energies that move through the body can cause long-term health problems if they are out of balance.

    Many jobs in modern society, for example, require workers to sit in a fairly stationary position for eight or more hours per day. These jobs rarely include stretch breaks, and even when employees do take lunch breaks, they usually end up sitting and eating in the break room.

    Sitting in a fixed position can cause energy blocks in many chakras. If the body is constantly in the same position, its energy cannot flow properly. Sitting causes a crease at the hips, obstructing energy flow. Most people who sit for long periods of time hunch over at the shoulders, which restricts energetic flow in the neck and chest.

    This energy begins to accumulate or become blocked, resulting in an imbalance. This can manifest in the physical body as tingling or numbness in the legs, severe low back pain, or chronic neck pain. These aches and pains can eventually lead to chronic headaches and migraines, or in severe cases, atrophied muscles and neuropathy.

    By properly balancing the chakras, energy naturally releases and flows, relieving physical symptoms. The circulatory and lymphatic systems are two of the many systems in the body that flow. Sitting in one position for an extended period of time can also have a negative impact on these systems, preventing fluids from flowing. This causes imbalances in the body, which can be corrected by allowing proper energy flow through the chakras.

    The nervous system is powered by electrical and energetic impulses. This is science, not spiritual musings. Because electricity is energy, and chakras are energetic centers, it stands to reason that the chakras can help the nervous system. Imbalanced chakras can cause improper electrical currents in the nervous system, which can cause tingling and numbness from long periods of stationary sitting.

    The chakras can become imbalanced for a variety of reasons in the modern world. Jobs are a major source of stress, but not just physical stress. Most jobs and careers involve some level of emotional stress. Millions of people work in jobs that they find unsatisfying and unfulfilling. Some people work because they need money, not because they enjoy their jobs. This wears down the energy and creates an imbalance, which can lead to stress, agitation, anxiety, and a variety of other physical and mental conditions.
