Chapter 1

Diabetes Nutrition Principles

Synopsis

Most diabetic patients are unaware of the extent to which their nutrition is consumed benefits or hurts them as a result, there is a requirement to ensure that all nutritional supplements are taken with the doctor's approval consulting a doctor.

Nutrition

It is hoped that with the proper nutritional advice, the patient will be able to achieve and maintain optimal metabolic rates, thereby regulating blood glucose levels to a normal range or, at the very least, to a more acceptable level.

These will aid in the prevention or reduction of the risk of other diabetes-related complications. Proper diabetes nutrition regimens are also intended to maintain a lipid and lipoprotein profile to reduce the risk of macrovascular disease.

The nutrition plan is also intended to promote optimal blood pressure levels, which will help to reduce the risks of vascular diseases.

Nutritional regimens are also expected to aid in the prevention and treatment of diabetic patients' chronic complications. The nutritional recommendations are modified to promote a healthier lifestyle, allowing diabetic patients to avoid obesity, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and nephropathy. The nutritional intake would also necessitate that the patient incorporates an adequate amount of physical activity into their lifestyle to avoid the nutrient being retained in the system and causing additional problems.

It should be noted that there are several different categories and levels of diabetic problems, so each case will be unique.

This means that any nutrition diet plan prescribed must be tailored to the specific needs of the individual patient.
