A BELLE GLADE GIRL WITH BIG DREAMS

No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid. - Lupita Nyong’o

Most kids who grow up in a single-parent home like I did, dream about their parents getting back together, going to Disney World, or getting a new toy. I, who always marched to the beat of my own drum, dreamed about owning a home. It’s not the only thing I dreamed about, but growing up in Belle Glade, Florida, a rural, poverty-stricken small town, made me long for something different.

From that point on, I started dressing differently. But the way I dressed wasn’t the only thing that changed. My mindset started to change as well.

We went to different schools to perform and model so I got chances to see different places outside of where I lived. I didn’t fully understand the environment I lived in until I traveled outside of it and beyond it. I loved where I came from but Belle Glade was a poverty environment. The only ways to make it out were through graduating from high school, receiving a scholarship, or going to college. Modeling club was an eye-opener for me.

Mrs. P, our mentor treated us like we were her kids. She told us we could go and do whatever we wanted to do. She reminded us that there was a great big world out there. She told us not
