Foreword
By Mercedes L. Clarke
If I knew then what I know now...LOL! One of the truest statements ever made.
My name is Mercedes Clarke. I am the older sister of Zandra. I am 27 years old, I am a wife and mother of 2 ½ children (currently expecting my third). Being an entrepreneur and having a family full of entrepreneurs leads to an extremely exciting and all over the place life, but it is a life I wouldn’t trade for the world.
As I said, I am the older sister of Zandra, and being able to fully experience her drive, determination, and passion for what she does has been nothing less than inspiring. Watching my baby sister follow a dream and turn it into a successful business is what I believe has been the driving force in more of our family members feeling confident to turn a passion of their own into a business they truly enjoy. To be completely honest my sister has really inspired me to live my best life and make a successful living doing things I love. I’m a firm believer that if you love something and are willing to put the work into it, you can be successful and HAPPY no matter what you do.
For me, it has taken a little longer to allow myself to tear down the walls and release myself from the boxes society has formed for people, especially young women like myself. Through the support and inspiration from my family, I have finally been able to figure out how to turn my passions into a successful path for me and my family.
Being a wife and a mother in my early 20s I had to take a second to rediscover myself. I had to remember what my passions were and fall back in love with them. I had to remind myself that making time for myself is important and vital to being a successful human being.
Once I rekindled my passions, I thought of ways I could turn this love and skill set into profit. I went back to school and earned my cosmetology license. In 2021, with a lot of planning and focus, I will have my very own salon. During the pandemic, I took some time to find productive ways to ease my anxiety. That is where I found my hidden talent as a painter. The way it brought such peace in a crazy time made me realize hey I might have something here
I took a leap of faith and decided to turn that into my very own art and apparel business Benzy Vibez
. Putting myself out there was so scary but the feedback and support I received when I finally put everything together and launched my first website was overwhelming. This experience taught me that sometimes you have to just put your heart in and go for it. Believe in yourself and your dream. See it, dream it, go out and get it.
Seeing my family have their own things and running their own lives and getting my own taste of it has just further deepened the thought that I just don’t want to work for somebody else. I want to be the boss
I want to be able to create job opportunities and to be able to help heal the world in my own way even if it’s the slightest impact.
If I had known then what I know now…...
I look at my baby sister and see how far she has come at only 20 years old and it just blows me away. I pray and genuinely believe that one day if I just keep pushing, keep working, and keep praying, I will reach the level I want to be at. I’ll have businesses that I can pass down to my children, businesses that will be able to take us amazing places in life. I now know that I, alongside my husband, can build an empire to leave behind which will create a new reality for generations to come.
Being who I am and being in the position God has blessed me in, I feel I can show my kids how to take charge in life, how to find what they love, how to be humble, the importance of being thankful always and to always realize how blessed they truly are. I want what I do with the empire I build to keep my family in a position to always give back and heal. Even if my kids want to go a completely different direction in life, they will still have the skills and knowledge, and self-confidence to have dreams and to do what they love to do.
I am proud of my baby sister and I am excited about all she is doing. This book is just a glimpse into the amazing person she is and I hope this collection truly inspires you as well.
Introduction
Hello, My name is Zandra Cunningham, welcome to the Science Behind It! book series. This is volume 2 in the series and I am so excited to introduce to you another set of amazing kids who are doing amazing things in the world.
I'm the founder of Zandra Beauty, a premium plant-based skincare company that I created at the age of nine years old. I am now 20 years old and my products are sold in stores across the nation. I am very proud of Zandra Beauty, our company’s growth and success are more than I could have imagined 10 short years ago.
This is just my amazing story. I am not the only one. This book is filled with amazing stories just like mine and it is my belief that this book will become a treasured collection in your home because not only will these stories inspire you and your loved ones, these stories will shift your mindset to what's possible. These young people will remind you not to limit yourself and will also teach you to learn from others. It is my hope that after you read these stories you will gain the confidence to overcome fear and doubt in order to experience your fullest potential.
Being an entrepreneur at any age is extremely hard, but being a CEO, being your own boss is also pretty amazing. It can allow you to be flexible and allow you to follow your dreams. Being an entrepreneur can be really fulfilling as you live out your vision and exceed your expectations. However, when everything is going good it is the CEO who gets the praise and when things fall apart it is the CEO who takes the blame. Being an entrepreneur is a lot of responsibility with many challenges.
Take all of that responsibility and multiply it times ten. That is what it means to be a young CEO. Not only is the praise amplified, but the failures and challenges can also be very devastating. When you combine all of that with the loneliness of being a kid CEO, the entrepreneurial journey these young moguls are on is awe-inspiring.
I remember being 9, 10, 11, just starting out, the loneliness was intense. All of my friends were busy watching TV or playing at the park, so
