Entrepreneurship for Teens - Blake Reynolds Martin
CHAPTER 1
BUILDING BLOCKS TO OPTIMIZING PRODUCTIVITY
Iknow what you might be thinking. You purchased this book to run a business! Not read some self-help story about bettering your day-to-day life. That is not what this is. However, there are some qualities within a self-help book that will be featured in this guide.
This is because, in order to become an entrepreneur, you must first work on yourself. Simply put, you are going to have competitors. These competitors have mastered their ability to get things done in a fast and productive way. There are some changes to be made in your life if you have not already implemented and absorbed the content of the following pages.
Before I became an entrepreneur, my everyday life was similar to the average teenager’s. I ate lots of food, had lots of friends, and played tons of video games! However, I always felt lost, like I needed more in order to reach my full potential. I began to realize, throughout my transition into becoming an entrepreneur, a new concept within my brain.
Our brains are like our phones. They can intake, process, and even distribute information based on how we perceive it. Similar to iPhones, our brains have a power supply. We can only utilize them so much in one day. Until our brain's energy is depleted and we need to recharge it. Instead of an Apple charger (like our phones), we use sleep to plug in and charge our brains for the next day.
Sometimes the time we spend on our phones is useless. Let’s be honest: watching guests go crazy on Dr. Phil isn’t the most useful energy to spend our phone or brain power on. However, phones allow us to partake in crucial activities. Email, texts, and phone calls are necessities when it comes to communication.
My point is that if you dream of being in the top 1% or even allowing your mind to unravel the entrepreneurial mindset, doing so will require us to spend our brain power on important things. We must sacrifice what others won’t in order to achieve what they can’t.
The next few sections will be your guide to optimizing your brain for finding your business, building it, and finally scaling it to the moon.
Like a triathlete, we must exercise our brains in multiple ways to strengthen our weaknesses and perfect our strengths. Each section is an exercise for your brain. In the end, training you for that gold Olympic medal.
UNDERSTANDING CIRCADIAN RHYTHM
Circadian rhythm is a natural occurrence within our bodies that unconsciously affects our everyday lives. Sometimes you wake up very tired and feel the need to go back to sleep. If you somehow manage to get out of bed, you may feel drained of energy and at a loss as to who or what caused this. Other times, you wake up before that alarm even rings, ready to spring out of bed and get straight to any work or projects you have to do.
Believe it or not, there is a reason for this complexation of wakeups. Not only can you understand why, but by doing so, you can alter certain sleep habits to nearly guarantee waking up in scenario two!
WHAT IS CIRCADIAN RHYTHM?
Circadian rhythm is a natural, internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and repeats roughly every 24 hours. It is an integral part of life, allowing individuals to function normally, and it’s responsible for our natural body clock. Most living things, like animals, plants, and even some bacteria, have a circadian rhythm.
The name circadian is derived from the Latin words circa
and diem,
which means around a day.
This means that a circadian rhythm is a biological process that takes place over roughly 24 hours, although in humans, it can range between 21 and 28 hours.
Circadian rhythms are responsible for a variety of biological functions in humans, including the regulation of sleep and wakefulness, body temperature, and hormone secretion. During the day, it prompts us to be alert and productive. At night, it signals our bodies to slow down, relax, and prepare for sleep.
The main factor that controls the circadian rhythm is light. Exposure to natural sunlight or artificial light from electronic devices sends signals to our brains to let us know when to be awake and when to sleep. Our bodies produce hormones like melatonin, which regulate our sleep, in response to light signaling.
Circadian rhythms can be disrupted by factors such as changes in work schedule, travel, or stress. Shift work and jet lag are two common examples of circadian rhythm disruption, which can cause fatigue and difficulty sleeping.
To maintain a healthy circadian rhythm, it is important to practice good sleep hygiene, such as avoiding screens before bed, sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, and getting enough bright light throughout the day. Also, a healthy diet, less stress, and regular exercise can help people sleep better and be healthier overall. We’ll get more into that later.
HOW CAN YOU OPTIMIZE YOUR CIRCADIAN RHYTHM?
In order to optimize your circadian rhythm, you must first learn your sleep chronotype. A sleep chronotype is the time of day during which you recharge your brain and sleep. Here are a few examples of the different types of chronotypes that people use to optimize their energy and work
