    Chapter 1

    Sadie

AS SADIE WATCHED THE stream of luggage going around and around on the carousel, she felt the burning gaze of the handsome young man next to her.

The crowd at the airport was relatively sparse, the plane hadn’t been full and most of the luggage had been picked up by their owners.  Retrieving her colorful suitcase should have been a no-brainer, but...

Stop looking at me that way, she wanted to tell that gorgeous face.  The man beside her was distracting her to the point where she’d let her large pink and white suitcase pass by her once again.

We should have seen your luggage come around by now, the handsome young man said.  Do you think the airline lost it?  Maybe we should enquire about it.

Sadie turned to him and smiled.  As her new manager in charge of overseeing several of her bakeries, Conrad Newton was way too attractive for his own good.  He didn’t belong in a bakery.  He belonged in a fashion magazine.

His strong, wide jaw spoke of his masculinity, while his bright blue eyes and dirty blond hair gave him a charming, boyish appeal.  Tall with broad shoulders, he had an air of dignity about him that added another level to his appeal.

I think I’m too caught up with the speech I have to make at the Food and Fashion Convention, Sadie lied.  Well, it was only a partial lie.  She was preoccupied by the weekend long event, but not enough to let her luggage roll by three times.

No. The distraction was definitely Conrad.  The flight had been pleasant enough with talk of the upcoming event, but on several occasions, she’d felt the heat of his gaze, the insinuation of his words and... oh... that one time when his hand had brushed up against hers as he’d reached for his bottle of water.

Yeah.  He distracted her all right.

Are you nervous about the speech you’re going to give? he asked, his voice deep and raspy.

Sadie spotted her large suitcase coming around.  There it is, she let out as she stepped forward, effectively sidestepping the question.

Here, Conrad said.  Let me.  He stepped up to the carousel, effortlessly pulled the large suitcase up and set it down on the floor to roll it to Sadie.  Here you go.

You’re a prince, you know that? Sadie said as she looked directly into his beautiful blue eyes.  A real prince.

He grinned as he took a hold of his own luggage.  I have been told that there’s something noble about my nose.  He turned to offer her a view of his profile and his perfectly chiseled nose.

Well, Sadie said as she took a hold of her suitcase’s handle.  I wouldn’t really know what a noble nose looks like, but I have noticed how all the girls are enjoying the sight of you.

He let out a heartfelt guffaw as they turned to head out of the airport.

Las Vegas, baby, Conrad called out as they emerged into the stifling desert heat.  This is going to be great.  He led the way to a waiting cab.

The cab driver smiled as they approached and quickly headed to the back of the car to open the trunk.

How long does it take to get to the Bellagio, Sadie asked the driver after he’d put the luggage in the trunk.

Just a few minutes, he said with a pleasant smile as he opened the back door of the car for her.

Great, she told Conrad as they got into the backseat.  I want to have time to settle in before heading to the convention center.

Conrad looked at his watch.  If all goes well, we should be at the hotel in time for the next water fountain show.

Sadie smiled and sat back as the cab driver took off.  It had been a while since she’d been in Vegas and was happy that her longtime culinary friend, Roxy Reynolds, had invited her.

You’ll be my celebrity guest, Roxy had said.  I want you to be the one to kick things off.

Sadie had been unable to refuse and had happily switched her schedule around in order to accommodate the request.

I’ve looked over what you want to say at the convention, Conrad said, breaking into Sadie’s thoughts.

Oh, good, Sadie said.  I was hoping you’d take a look.  What do you think?

You sound like a world renown pastry chef who knows what she’s talking about.

Sadie smiled.  Good.  This is Roxy’s first big time event, and I don’t want to let her down.

This is the girl that you know from culinary school?

That’s the one, Sadie said.  "She’s a really smart and outgoing girl.  You know... a real extravert.  She loves people, loves getting to know them, loves listening to them.  This whole
