    Chapter 1

    Sadie

SADIE PULLED HER CAR into the drive of the cute and quaint country inn the Apple Baking Contest of Apple Valley, Connecticut was to take place. She had received an invitation by the mayor of Apple Valley, herself, to be the celebrity judge of the contest, and could not refuse it.

As she parked her red convertible Mustang into the check-in parking space in front of the lobby, she took a deep breath of fresh air. Can you just smell that? she asked her Scottish Terrier dog Biscuit and her black cat Orchid. It smells like fresh baked apple pie out here. So wonderful!

Biscuit’s nose wiggled as he lifted his head to smell the air. Woof! Woof!

Orchid licked her whiskers with her tongue before purring Meow!

That apple smell is everywhere! Sadie exclaimed.

Although Sadie grew a few apple trees on her own few acres of land at home, she never thought an entire valley could smell like apples. That’s why this place is called Apple Valley, she said to her pets. I know. I know.

Beyond the country inn were rolling hills of apple trees that went on for miles.

As Biscuit and Orchid hopped out of her convertible, she opened the trunk of her car, to grab her luggage. I’ve never seen so many apple trees, she said to them.

Sadie Silver? a booming voice said from behind her.

She turned around to see who had called her name with such a booming movie star masculine voice. She almost gasped as she stared at the largest man she had ever met.

Like a lumberjack, the handsome man was dressed in a buffalo plaid red and black checked shirt, jeans, and boots. About 7 feet tall, the man’s head almost touched the top of the doorway. He was wide on top with broad shoulders, huge arms, and a muscular chest that tapered down into a smaller waist.

My goodness. He looked like a comic book superhero come to life.

He had dark brown hair and a neatly trimmed short beard that gave him a sexy mysteriousness. However, his twinkling blue eyes that seemed to be laughing made him friendly and approachable. Bill? She gasped in surprised. Billy Bailey? What are you doing here?

Bill took in Sadie’s fashionable red blazer, matching tailored shorts, a red and black floral blouse, and silver driving shoes. Wow, Sadie, he said. You still look like a million bucks! Always the fashion plate.

And you, Billy, Sadie said, You’ve couldn’t have grown another five inches, could you? What are you drinking? Some kind of Miracle Grow for humans?

Billy laughed and said, Just my genes. Mom’s 6 foot 2 and Dad’s a little taller than that.

It’s been, what, five or six years? Sadie asked.

About, Billy said. "You’ve visited our small farm to arrange for us to supply your bakeries with some fresh fruit and saw that I was trying to bake my first pie to impress a girl I liked
