Chapter 1
Sadie
THIS IS GOING TO BE a fun night,
Sadie said as she adjusted the heavy bangle around her neck, then ran her hand over her slick dark hair.
I’m not so sure,
Palmer said, looking stiff in his police uniform.
They pulled up in front of the mayor’s mansion. The old colonial style home, with its tall white columns, deep red bricks and dozens of windows, was lit up with hundreds of deep purple lights.
The eerie glow added to the drama of the night.
The immense grounds sloped down toward the street with the mansion set twenty feet above street level. It added to the majesty of the large home.
Pull up over there,
Sadie said, pointing to a parking spot in the parking lot to the right of the large house.
As Palmer parked the car and killed the engine, Sadie looked into the backseat to see Biscuit and Orchid sitting patiently. Come on, guys,
she said. It’s time to party.
She got out and straightened her crisp white dress that was tied at the waist with a thick golden cord. With dozens of bangles clinking together on her wrists, she once again ran her hand over her thick black hair.
Hey, Cleopatra,
Palmer called over the hood of the car. How do I look?
You’d give Kenwood a run for his money,
she said, admiring the way the police uniform highlighted his strong build.
Thanks,
he grunted as he looked up at the mansion. Still... I’ve never been a fan of masquerade balls.
Oh,
Sadie said as she opened the back door to the car to let her pets out. Costume parties are such fun. I can’t wait to see how everyone else is dressed up.
Biscuit hopped out of the car and immediately sat down to look up at her. I’m with him. This feels silly.
You look adorable Anubis,
Sadie said.
Please, don’t call me that.
You’re a veritable Egyptian god.
Yeah. God of the dead.
To give him the appearance of being half jackal and half human, Sadie had constructed a gingerbread man’s body out of thick caramel colored felt which she draped around his neck. The human body, arms and legs hung in front of him.
Are you coming out, Orchid?
Sadie called into the backseat of the car.
The feline let out a long, wailing meow before finally emerging with all the grace and elegance of Cleopatra’s favorite Egyptian guard cat.
Thank goodness you didn’t have to dress me up like a clown in order to make me look regal and noble.
Sadie looked at her and nodded. All she’d done was use a little food dye to darken the contour of Orchid’s eyes, accentuating the slanted eyes.
I told you I looked silly, Biscuit argued, pawing at the costume. Look at me. I’ve got a big head over this tiny human body. It’s ridiculous, I tell you.
You both look great,
Sadie said as she readjusted her sandals, brought her serpent armband back to her upper arm and turned to head to the party. Come on. You two play nice.
Pulling his police cap over his head, Palmer walked beside her. I have to say, I really like your choice in costume. You look great, Sadie.
She snorted. Thanks. I figured, I already have the thick straight hair. Might as well take advantage of that.
Well then, with that logic, why didn’t you make me Toto, instead of Anubis?
Besides,
Sadie said as she looked down at Biscuit and smiled. We’re a set,
she said. Cleopatra, her loyal guard cat and the ever present Anubis. We’re all together.
They arrived at the wide front steps that led up
