Chapter 1
Sadie
THE ROLLING COUNTRYSIDE just outside of Paris rolled by as Sadie sat in the backseat of the cab with Orchid on her lap and Biscuit beside her.
On hearing that the International Chocolate Baking Competition was to be held in the Parisian countryside, Sadie hadn’t known what to expect and she’d wondered about it as she’d flown over the Atlantic. What kind of castle? An old drafty thing? Something more palatial and modern?
But as they approached the old yet majestic castle, she was awed by what she saw.
The cab driver turned off the main road, drove through the gates and took a cobblestone path up to the main entrance of the immense chateau. "Voila, Mademoiselle, he said.
Le Chateau Gregaire."
Staring up at the storybook building, Sadie was speechless as the driver opened the car door for her and waited for her to get out. Merci,
she finally said as she got out.
He went to the trunk to get her luggage. Would you like me to escort you inside, Mademoiselle?
No,
Sadie said as Biscuit tugged on his leash. "I’ll take it from here. Thank you very much. Merci. Merci beaucoup."
My pleasure.
He set her luggage down, bowed respectfully and returned to the driver’s seat then drove off.
Standing before the historic building, Sadie took a moment to absorb it all. Did you see that?
she said to Orchid and Biscuit.
The elegant, three story building had dozens of arched windows and was topped with a steep pitched blue tiled roof with several turrets and two large lookout towers. Several of the windows were adorned with subdued and tastefully crafted stained glass.
She set Orchid down and unleashed Biscuit. We’re going to be spending the next little while here,
she said as she picked up her luggage. Don’t wander off too far, now.
She entered the romantic chateau and was immediately struck by the immensity of the front hall. The intricately adorned ceiling reached up the three stories adding to the spaciousness of the foyer.
Miss Sadie Silver.
Sadie turned to the sound of her name and saw a bubbly and vivacious redhead coming towards her. Dressed in simple black slacks and a black, white and gold slightly translucent high collared shirt, she looked elegant and professional.
I’m Molly Ingram,
the redhead said, extending her hand. You’re Sadie, right?
Yes,
Sadie said with a smile as she shook the woman’s hand.
Good,
she said. You’re the last of the contestants to arrive. Come this way,
she said as she headed toward a door at the far end of the foyer. I want you to meet the others.
She glanced back over her shoulder at Sadie. Oh, I’m the producer of the show, by the way. So, we’ll be seeing a lot of each other.
They entered a large, high ceiling sitting room that housed a variety of Louis XV and Louis XVI chairs, comfortable sofas, antique settees and recliners.
This is Bailey,
Molly said, gesturing with her hand to a good looking young man to the right. He’s my assistant... my right arm. If you need anything... anything at all, you just let him know and he’ll do everything he can to make it happen.
Hello,
Sadie said to the young man who nodded.
Then we have our celebrity chef from England, Mr. Andrew Angus,
Molly said nodding towards a handsome young man with thick brown hair. He is said to be as charming as he is talented. Mr. Angus runs a preeminent luxury chocolate shop in England... and all of this at only 29 years old.
Nice to meet you,
Sadie said with a nod.
Verna Vicious likes to let her dark side shine in her confections as she creates some of the most divine, if not macabre pieces that resemble body parts, creepy crawlies and anything else that might make your skin crawl.
Sadie smiled at the fair hair woman with the black lipstick. Interesting.
Then you have Diego Diaz,
Molly went on. Mr. Diaz is from Spain and has a knack for bringing a little Latin spice to everything he makes. His blend of sweet and piquant leave a lasting impression on everyone who tries his desserts.
The young man
