    He resigned after witnessing a poorly planned and executed Afghanistan withdrawal. Scheller was thrust into the media when he posted a video from his o ce as a battalion commander. Hopes all Americans will open their eyes to the fundamental problems facing the military.

    INTRODUCTION

    The United States military's obligation is to win wars. Since World War II, the U.S. military has continued losing wars. Senior military leaders must be held accountable. Fixing the promotion system, career path ladder, and culture of the military should be the long-term approach. Jay Parini: Military leaders degrade fresh perspectives by moving service members through narrow paths designed to imitate predecessors' experiences.

    Parini says choke points deemed essential to the organization, but absent any correlation to war, have been inappropriately prioritized for promotion. He says senior military leaders don't have the ability to disobey orders in commonsense moments. A large portion of battalion commanders are sons of other generals. Children of generals are not given a free pass. When people have small advantages, these advantages build up over time.
