The Hindu and the Christian communities of Goa have their own special dishes which they inevitably prepare on every special occasion. . There are other divisions like the Brahmin and non-Brahmin, both Hindu and Christian, which all offer culinary variations to the originals.

There is some influence of the different varieties of cuisine from other states of India.

The people in Goa enjoy rice, fish, and coconut, in their everyday life. It is their staple diet. Almost every Goan house prepares dishes made of these three items.

Preparing traditional Goan dishes is not an easy task, for it consumes a lot of time and effort. A lot of grinding of spices is required for Goan dishes. There are hundreds of spices and ingredients used in typical Goan food.

Every major city in Goa offers a wide range of cuisine in small and big restaurants and bars. Along the beaches one can find hundreds of shacks serving hot Goan food to tourists and locals.

Feni, an alcoholic drink make from cashew nuts, is an essential part of meal in Goan restaurants and homes. Locals and tourists wash down delicious Goan food with fresh Feni.
