Poetry in translation
'Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity,’ said William Wordsworth.
To add on, I would say that poetry is an art as it is innate and organic. It springs from the depths of the heart of the poet, that fountainhead of emotions, who then gives shape and structure to those emotions at a given point of time. It is also a craft as the poet chooses appropriate words to convey his or her feelings with clarity, and shapes and chisels and fine-tunes them all to perfection. One could say that poetry is a collection of words that are arranged in perfect synchronization, much like a musical composition. It wouldn’t be incorrect to place poetry on a high pedestal and proclaim that it is the most sophisticated form of expression as it is evocative and transports readers to a different space and time, every time they read a poem.
Translating such a powerful form of literature is not an easy venture. It requires a lot of creativity, a great deal of understanding of the culture and times in which the poet exists or existed in order to capture the emotions as they are, an excellent command over the languages from and into which the poem is translated, coupled with a rich vocabulary, a generous dose of integrity and loyalty to the original work, and the daring to sound original in the language that the poem is translated into. Above all, the translator strikes a friendship with the poet with all love and zeal for his/her creation, and works hand-in-glove to ensure that the emotions and meaning are not lost in translation.
Srivatsa has all the merits that are listed above and then some more, for he is not merely a translator but also a poet in his own right. And, as far as my knowledge goes, he
