Recipes from Italy - Dana Meachen Rau
Ancient and Modern
Italy is easy to find on a map. At the base of the continent of Europe, Italy looks like a boot dipping its toe into the Mediterranean Sea.
The land varies throughout the country. Skiers enjoy the mountainous Alps on the northern border. Vacationers enjoy the coast of the Italian Riviera. In the south, an active volcano, Mount Etna, looms over the island of Sicily.

Throughout its long history, Italy has been a center of art and culture. Thousands of years ago, Rome, the current capital of Italy, ruled the Roman Empire. This empire stretched west into Europe, north into Britain, east into Asia, and south into parts of Africa. Over water and land, Rome traded new goods and traditions with its conquered regions. Rome influenced the art, science, and literature of the known world.
Today, Italy has a diverse community. The north contains more cities, while the south has more farmers. Like many modern cities around the world, Italian cities are filled with large apartment and business buildings. In older sections, however, you can still see the narrow streets and piazzas, or city squares, from long ago. In the countryside, towns and villages are filled with people who have close ties to their families and communities.

Italy is a modern country that still holds memories of its past. Children pass the ruins of the Colosseum on their way to school. Friends play soccer on a field that was once a chariot racetrack. People may take a lunch break sitting at the base of an ancient marble statue. The richness of Italy’s past is still a part of Italian life today.

Pasta and pizza may be the first things to come to mind when you think of Italian food. But they are only a small part of it. Italy’s many regions have developed their own special dishes. In areas near the coast, seafood is an important part of
