The country of Mexico is on the continent of North America. It shares its northern border with the United States and its southern border with Guatemala and Belize. Mexico’s west coast lies on the Pacific Ocean, and its east coast on the Gulf of Mexico. The tropical sun warms southern Mexico, bringing hot, humid weather. The drier north is covered by deserts. High snowy mountains slope down to low sandy coasts. Rich farmland bursts with crops.
pictureThe city of Puerta Vallarta lies on the west coast of Mexico and is a popular tourist destination.
Over thousands of years, small farming villages of the region developed into great civilizations, such as the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec. Spanish explorers in the Caribbean area set out for Mexico and arrived in 1519 looking for gold and treasure. They came in contact with the Aztecs, a powerful and rich empire. After violent battles, the Spanish took over. After three centuries under colonial rule, Mexicans fought for independence. This was finally achieved in 1821.
pictureTraditional music is a part of Mexico’s rich culture.
Today, most Mexicans are related to both the Spanish and the native peoples of the past. Most Mexicans speak Spanish. But some hold on to the original traditions and languages of their ancestors. In big cities, people might live in high-rise buildings. In the country, homes of sunbaked adobe bricks blend in with the land. All over the country, people gather in the marketplace (mercado) to enjoy the riches of Mexico’s land.
