Summary of The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand - Willie M. Joseph
1. The Cobblestone Telegraph
The London-based billionaire Xavier Darling is investing $30 million dollars in the Hotel Nantucket. He has never owned a hotel, and he has never set foot on the island. JJ and Lizbet Keaton worked together at the Deck restaurant on Nantucket. In September, Lizbet discovered 187 sexually explicit texts that JJ had sent to their wine rep. Every employee is sworn to secrecy about what's going on inside Xavier Darling Hotel in 2021-22. Architectural Digest editor Jill Tananbaum is obsessed with interior design and wanted to cover the hotel's renovation.
Local artist Tamela Cornejo hand-painted the ceiling of each room with a mural of the night sky. The ultimate reveal is the hotel's bar, a high-concept jewel box painted Farrow and Ball's Pitch Blue. There's nothing like it anywhere else on the island. I was hoping for more of a story,
Jordan Randolph says. Mint Benedict is the only child of Jackson and Dahlia Benedict, who owned the hotel from 1910 to 1922. The Hotel Nantucket is haunted, and it's all my father's fault,
Mint says.The Fifth Key
Lizbet Keaton’s Breakup Playlist
Last Night at the Deck is a bittersweet tradition. Lizbet and JJ have to say goodbye to the team they poured so much time and energy (and money) into. Some of the staff will return next spring, but not everyone, so a summer can never be replicated. She punches in JJ's passcode and sees pictures of his erect penis and woman's breasts. The texts are from Christina Cross, their wine rep. Lizbet wants to flush the phone but doesn't; she takes screenshots and texts them to herself.
It's not what it looks like,
Lizbet says as she reads through texts from JJ to her ex-boyfriend. I want to apply for the general-manager position at the new Hotel Nantucket.
Lizbet used to work at the Rising Sun Retirement Community in Nantucket. He needs someone with a background in luxury hotels to run it. Lizbet had a proverbial clean slate when she accepted the Nantucket Hotel's vacant managerial position. Two days later, Xavier Zoom-called Lizbet and offered her the job.
The secret of change is to focus your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. I'm going to share with you now who one of the women is,
he says. Lizbet checks her image on her laptop screen; she's maintaining a sort of straight face. Hotel blogger Shellycarpenter.com awards properties anywhere from one to five keys. Carpenter reviews hotels with the same critical eye that she does the Belmond Cap Juluca in Anguilla. Shelly will never give a five-key review; withholding it is her currency.
2. The fifth key
She had been sleeping on a cot in the attic so that her employer could sneak up and visit
her while he was out of town. Benedict started the fire intentionally and then locked the door to the storage closet from the outside. Dahlia wasn't the only one to blame. Jack had seduced Grace, and the vast difference in their social status left Grace with no choice but
