Leopards: Then and Today
Leopards are very closely related to lions, tigers and jaguars, which are all in the genus panthera (all cats in this group can roar). However, despite their name, snow leopards are not part of the same group.

The closest living relative to the leopard is the lion.

The earliest leopard fossils date back to over 600,000 years ago and were found in Europe. Palaeontologists have also found leopard fossils in Japan.
