Where do they live, and how did they get there?

Zebras live in eastern and southern Africa. Their habitats are very diverse and include savannas, shrublands, woodlands, grasslands and mountainous areas.

Zebras are in the same family (Equus) as horses and asses. However, unlike their close friends, zebras have never been properly domesticated.

Around 2.8 million years ago, zebras and asses were the same animals. At this time, zebras started to evolve into what they are today—with the three species forming around one million years later.
