    Koala Facts

Although koalas look like bears, they are actually marsupials. Other marsupials include wombats and kangaroos.

    • • •

What is a marsupial? Marsupials are mammals that give birth to not-quite developed young, and they are usually carried in a pouch. Most marsupials live in Australia and New Zealand. However, there are a few species in the Americas.

    • • •

The scientific name for the koala is Phascolarctos cinereus.

    • • •

Koalas can only be found in the wild in Australia. Specifically, in the southeastern and eastern areas of Australia — mostly along the coastlines.

    • • •

    Baby koalas are called ‘joeys’.

    • • •

Joeys develop in their mother’s pouch for around six months. They spend the next six months hitching a ride on their mother’s back.

    ––––––––

    ––––––––

Joeys use their mother’s pouch for feeding and sleeping until they are one year old.
