What are lemurs, and where do they live?

Lemurs are mammals. They are also primates, which is a group of mammals that includes gorillas, monkeys, orangutans, and us: humans.

All lemurs aren’t alike! In fact, there are eight families of lemurs (three of which are now extinct) and around 100 different species! The number of species is constantly changing as new ones are discovered.

There are more species of lemurs than any other species of primate. This is thanks to all the different climates of their homeland, Madagascar.

Lemurs only live in the wild in Madagascar, which is a large island off the east coast of Africa.
