Thousands of years ago, power was gained primarily through physical violence and maintained through brute force. There was no need for subtlety; a king or emperor had to be merciless. Only a select few had power, but no one suffered more than n women in this scheme of things. They had no way to compete, no weapon at their disposal to get a man to do what they wanted, politically and socially, and even at home. Of course, men had a weakness: their insatiable desire for sex. A woman could always play on this desire, but the man-regained control once she gave in to sex. In addition, if she denied sex, he could turn away or use force. What good was there in such a fragile and fleeting power? Still, the women had no choice but to submit.

 

Those women—like Bathsheba of the Old Testament; Hele, Ana of Troy; the Chinese siren His Shi, and the greatest of all, Cleopatra—invented seduction. They first attracted a man by a tempting appearance, for which they devised their makeup and ornament to produce the image of a goddess made flesh. By displaying only hints of her body, they excited a man's imagination, thus stimulating a desire not only for sex but also for something greater: the possibility of possessing a fantasy figure. Once they gained the interest of their victims, these women induced them to leave the masculine world of war and politics and spend time in the feminine world, a sphere of luxury, spectacle, and pleasure.
