Currently, the use of cannabis has had an increase in its medicinal applications due to the isolation of its multiple cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, cannabigerol or cannabichromene, which are characterized by having little or no psychoactive activity. Its therapeutic potential has been evidenced in osteoarthritis pain, allergic and inflammatory disorders, epilepsy, anxiety, skin conditions, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, arousing great interest also in the field of veterinary medicine and pet owners.

INTRODUCTION

The Cannabis sativa L. plant has been used by mankind for more than 6,000 years for multiple purposes, including the search for its psychoactive effects, its use in the manufacture of ropes and textiles, therapeutic benefits, and more recently for industrial uses - biofuels, auto parts, insulating materials, fibers, and more. Throughout history we can learn how cannabis has been close to the animal world, even from the time of the Greeks who used this plant to heal wounds and hemorrhages in their horses; in addition, the green seeds of the plant were immersed in water or wine and then heated to relieve ear pain and inflammation.

The first known record of the use of cannabis in animals was in 1607 when the English naturalist clergyman Edward Topsell claimed that combining hemp seeds with the regular feed ration of horses resulted in rapid weight gain in these animals. Likewise by the 1800s American veterinarians were using medications with high concentrations of cannabis in their formulation for the treatment of colic in these equines.

Later in India in 1843, the Irish physician William O'Shaughnessy - who introduced cannabis to the West - used cannabis for the treatment of multiple conditions and determined that the plant has benefits to excite the brain system, stimulate the digestive organs and relieve pain. Inspired by this, O'Shaughnessy began his own animal studies to ensure through his trials that the substance was safe to be administered to humans, both children, and adults.
