    About the Author

    I

    Acknowledgment

To my readers, interpreters, and audience:

As the author of Thoughts of an African Girl, it is my intention to trust the free instinct of readers and interpreters in understanding the need for a brief pause after each line where gravity and conviction of the thought and feelings lie to mean quiet or silence for them to reach the minds and hearts of readers, interpreters, and audience alike.

    Before

    Head held high

    Shoulders up

    Oscar-winning performance

    Can they see

    the scars and blood stains

    Do they know

    the masked smiles

    the brokenness…

    the truth?

    I. The Becoming

    Reflection

They say the mirror is a reflection,

It reflects everything you are -

Your flaws, your weaknesses, even your strong points

So why is it when I look in the mirror,

    I barely recognize myself,

I see a girl in the mirror who looks so strange

Her eyes no longer reflect hope

She seems to be dying slowly…

    Just going through the motions,

Losing herself in all the madness

    She’s always been a survivor,

    Fighting for what is right

    Pushing through it,

But she seems to have forgotten how to fight

    Tell me,

How many times can you go through something,

    before you finally break?
