    THE LOCATION

Durban, nicknamed Durbs, is the third-most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town. Durban is the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. Durban includes neighbouring towns and has a population of about 3.44 million.

    CHAPTER ONE

Sally saved her document and made sure she had every page printed before putting it together in the presentation folder. If her boss went ahead and implemented what she proposed, the company could treble their business. Being the head of the marketing department, it was her job to present the management team with fresh ideas.

The team that worked for her earned salaries that were below average in comparison with other companies. Sally was able to afford her house, a small car, and live comfortably on what she earned. She was wise with her money and saved where she could. Her bank account looked rather healthy with the extra jobs she took on after hours. She had a talent for marketing and her promotions were always a roaring success.

Her team looked at her as she stood up and took the proposal in to her hands. She walked out of the office and went to the meeting room. Sally was surprised that the entire management team were sitting in the boardroom. She walked in and sat down next to one of the managers.

The owner of the business stood up and cleared his throat. Thank you for joining us, Miss Watson. The management team and I have decided to merge the sales and marketing departments. Unfortunately, we will be restructuring both departments. She looked across at the sales manager who seemed to have rather a smug smile. It immediately dawned on her that she wasn’t there to discuss the proposal, but something more sinister.

Your members of staff will be shifted in to the sales department. Your role as the marketing manager will no longer be relevant. Sally took the presentation folder and slipped it off of the table and placed it on her lap. She looked at him and waited. The boardroom was eerily silent.

They turned and looked at Sally. If the management team have made the decision, surely all managers were involved.

    Yes, they were.

Mister Simons, am I not part of the management team?

    You are the marketing manager.

Oh, I see. So the sales manager is part of the management team but not the marketing manager. You need to be more specific when you talk about the management team. I can see by the smug look on Mister Ivor’s face that he was informed about this decision, and was probably one of the decision-makers.

    Yes, he was.

Rather cut to the chase. You are restructuring and my position is redundant.

We will be going through a retrenchment process.

And how many staff members will be retrenched?

    One.

Sally stood up and nodded. Good day gentlemen. Make sure my retrenchment package is deposited in to my account within the hour. I shall take my leave, clear my computer and desk. Make sure your salaries department check those figures. If one cent is short paid, my attorney will be around your neck like a scarf.

Mister Simons stood up and looked at her. Well, Mister Ivor, good luck with your new role. May the sales flourish. She walked out of the boardroom and went to her office. Everything that was on her computer, she had already copied on to a flash drive for safety. She wiped everything from her hard drive and took every flash drive that was neatly stored in a box and put it in to her handbag. The staff watched as she took a box and placed her books and possessions in to the box. Making sure the proposal she had worked on was neatly packed beneath her books.

Good luck in your new department. And not a soul knew I was being retrenched. Strange. She checked her drawers and switched off the computer. Sally lifted the box and walked out of the office.

Sally made her way home and took her box and packed the books where they belonged. She took the presentation folder and put it in her filing cabinet. If the owner had seen her proposal his company could have soared. And yet, he had chosen Clive Ivor over her. Someone who knew nothing about marketing, and couldn’t sell an item even if he tried.

It was already lunch time and she made a sandwich and had her cup of coffee before going in to the study. She finished and tidied and went to the study and sat down and switched on her laptop. Sally checked her emails but there was nothing new. She checked her banking site and saw the amount that had been paid in to her account. It was a huge amount that included every cent the company owed her. She had never taken leave or had a day off sick. As she checked the figures she noticed they had forgotten to pay her annual bonus. She lifted the handset and dialled.

Mrs Gilmore, I would like a word with Mister Simons please.

Oh, Miss Watson, he isn’t available.

Should I have my attorney give him a call?

    One moment.

Two seconds later Mister Simons was on the phone. Yes, Miss Watson. The retrenchment package has been deposited in to your account as you requested.

With an error. Why has my bonus not been included?

Well, the bonuses are only paid at the end of the year. That won’t apply.

"Would you like me to schedule an appointment and bring my attorney? What time would suit you?
