Thomas Murphy’s book, No Compromise
, gives us an insight on breaking cycles, gives us permission to be honest, and promotes self-empowerment. It speaks volumes towards the black community that has been silent when it comes to mental health, especially for our returning citizens.

INTRODUCTION
When I look back over my life as traumatizing as it was, the lessons drawn out of the drama are priceless. I feel very fortunate to have survived. So many didn’t. Growing up in an environment where drugs, violence, and lack are just a part of everyday life eventually takes its toll. Such abnormalities influence the mindset and are processed in such a way that one’s identity is formed by it.
You can’t beat the ghetto so you join it and titles such as thug, gangsta, hustler, etc. are derivatives. Then, of course, those titles are lived out. This is how we arrive at conformity and desensitization. This was certainly my situation as I grew up in the inner city. There are so many others, all around the world, in this situation now. I should not have had to experience an environment where ducking bullets had become a norm. No one should.
It’s no wonder that our kind fills up the grave yards and prisons. This is an era where therapy is being noticed on another level. People are realizing how important mental health is. We are not only talking about those classified with phschotrocist mental illnesses, we are also talking about average people who just can’t seem to get out of their own way. In most cases such hindering behavior can be traced to a past abnormal experience or an event that’s no longer relevant.
According to The United States Statistics over 75% of prisoners are rearrested within five years. Apparently there are a significant number of people who continue to get in their own way. Could it be that they are traumatized? After war we understand that the soldiers could very well suffer PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). All due respect to our soldiers, but I think we have to consider that our youth experience violence in a very unique way of their own without the training and preparation as our war heroes.
No Compromise
is a guide towards a therapist that will always be with you, one that has always been with you, one that has the kind of experience you’re going to need to set
