LIKE THE CRISIS OF ’29, OR MORE... A NEW GLOBAL CONTEXT
THE THESIS OF CHESNAIS IS THAT IN 2007 THERE WAS A RUPTURE IN A LONG PHASE OF EXPANSION OF THE CAPITALIST ECONOMY AND THE START OF A CRISIS COMPARABLE TO THE ONE THAT STARTED IN 1929.
THAT CRISIS BEGAN IN 1929 and reached its peak in 1933, later going through a long recession.
KARL MARX: THE TRUE LIMIT OF CAPITALIST PRODUCTION IS CAPITAL ITSELF. UNDER CAPITALISM, PRODUCTION IS ONLY PRODUCTION FOR CAPITAL AND NOT CAPITAL FOR PRODUCTION
THE CONSERVATION AND VALORIZATION OF CAPITAL NEEDS THE EXPROPRIATION AND IMPOVERISHMENT OF THE GREAT MASSES OF PRODUCERS (THE WORKERS). AS CAPITAL TENDS TO THE UNLIMITED INCREASE OF PRODUCTION BY PRODUCTION ITSELF, IT ENDS UP WITH THE PRODUCTIVE FORCES (THE LABOR FORCE) AND CAPITAL CANNOT REALIZE ITSELF
SOMETHING IS HAPPENING today that was not happening in 1930: countries that were semi-colonial at that time, such as China and India, are now important countries.
THERE IS NOW A UNIFIED WORLD ECONOMY TO A DEGREE UNKNOWN IN THE PAST
A new kind of crisis
Marx: Capitalist production constantly aspires to overcome these limits immanent to it, but it can only overcome them by resorting to means that again raise before it these same limits with even greater force.
MEANS TO WHICH CAPITALISM RESOURCED
IN THE LAST 30 TO TRY TO OVERCOME
THE IMMANENT LIMITS OF CAPITAL
LIBERALIZATION OF FINANCE, TRADE AND INVESTMENT: this includes the destruction of some partial limits on capital by political institutions. Unfettered, capital believed that it could overcome all limits
CREATION OF FICTITIOUS CAPITAL AND MEANS OF CREDIT: with the aim of expanding to insufficient demand (cheap and long-term loans)
REINCORPORATION OF THE USSR, CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES TO CAPITALISM: this is the most important means
LIBERALIZATION, WORLD market, competition...
Global liberalization and deregulation implied the dismantling of the few control tools that had been implemented at the end of World War II.
A TRUE GLOBAL MARKET WAS CREATED, UNDERSTOOD AS A SPACE FREE OF RESTRICTIONS TO ALL
