    OVERVIEW

    The Blue Zones Solution by Dan Buettner expands on research into the regions of the world where residents are more likely to live to the age of 100 and beyond, the Blue Zones.

    The original Blue Zones existed in five places. First, on the Greek island of Ikaria, Buettner learned the principles of the Mediterranean diet. In Okinawa, Japan, Buettner studied the longest-living women in the world. Buettner met the longest-living siblings and the longest-lived men in Sardinia, Italy. In Loma Linda, California, the longest-living community is the Seventh Day Adventists, who practice their faith by making healthful choices. And on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Buettner studied communities where residents live to the age of 90 an average of two and a half times more often than in the US, but spend a fifteenth of what the US spends on health care.

    Buettner chose to follow the example of Finnish health professionals who worked to decrease the rate of death by heart disease among men by 85 percent in five years in North Karelia, the region of Finland that previously had the highest rate of heart disease in the world. The
