    The problem of pain has become, since my graduation from medical school, a major epidemic in most of the industrialized countries of the Western world. The diagnosis and treatment of these disorders is now a gargantuan industry.

    The author, a physical therapist, began to doubt the validity of the conventional diagnoses and treatments of the neck, shoulder, and back pain. A closer look revealed that back muscles, from the back of the head to the buttocks, were primarily involved. This confirmed the work of all those through the years who described what they called fibromyalgia, fibrositis, or myofascial pain.
