Preface
Narcissistic behavior doesn't come out of nowhere . It's not like this guy just decided to act evil one day. He probably had some narcissistic traits throughout childhood, but outright narcissism often develops in adulthood due to abuse/trauma, certain psychological processes (like gaslighting or thought suppression), defense mechanisms that prevent therapists from recognizing what's actually going on, and increasing levels of entitlement that are reinforced by society.
When you're a little kid it can feel really scary if your parents aren't having a good day,
Ray says. You have no control over these big emotions they experience.
That vulnerability makes kids into excellent targets for predators because they're the most easily controlled. They're like these little soldiers that are just primed to please somebody else.
In adulthood, this process often happens in romantic relationships. Narcissists test their targets for vulnerability with a slow buildup of love-bombing and gaslighting. They shower you with attention and flattery, picking out things about yourself that you're insecure about and making them sound magical or special. You feel seen by someone who's powerful, interesting, talented — basically everything you wish you were.
You give those impossible standards a shot because maybe if you try hard enough, it can work out . But
