Why Personal Branding is Important to You

Right now — at this very moment — you’ve already established your own personal brand. Everyone has their own personal brand whether they know it or not. It’s true; I’m not making this shit up. See so for yourself.

Think of any person you know. If you had to describe their personal brand in three words, which three words come to mind first? Those three words are your perception of that person’s brand. Perhaps all three words describing that person’s personal brand were swear words. You’ve probably worked with a few people like that. You wouldn’t even go to their birthday party if they somehow managed to book your favourite band and had an open bar. Not worth it. But, under similar circumstances, you’d probably attend their funeral.

Your perception of someone else’s personal brand could be positive or negative. Either way, whether you know it or not, in your mind, you’ve associated a specific brand with each person in your life. You hold your opinion of that person’s brand as a result of the impression they’ve made with you through the interactions you’ve had with them.

For instance, if you see one of your friends is calling your phone Friday night, the first thoughts that come to your mind about this person’s brand could be the emotions of excitement and happiness, because you know this person always invites you to the best parties. Also, they do that thing with their tongue. That person has a positive personal brand that instantly creates the emotions of excitement and happiness.

Alternatively, you might see one of your acquaintances is calling your phone way too early Saturday morning — way earlier than noon on a Saturday. You’re not old and rich, so you don’t get up early to play golf. This person has no business calling you before noon on a Saturday. You also know this person only calls you when they want something from you. So, since this person has a history of calling you at annoying times, and, most importantly, you know they only call you when they want something from you, the first thoughts that come to your mind about this person’s brand could be the emotions of anger and annoyance. That person has a negative personal brand that instantly creates the emotions of anger and annoyance.

It’s important you don’t forget, every person in your life, whom you have an opinion of their personal brand, also has their own opinion of your personal brand. When they think of you, certain words come to their mind to describe your personal brand. When you call them, and they see your name on their phone’s caller ID, your personal brand generates emotions for them. If you want people to answer your calls — because they’re excited to see your name on their phone’s caller ID — you need to have a great personal brand.

Alright, I think that’s about enough of an intro to set up the importance of having a good personal brand. It’s time to get into the steak and lobster. I don’t run the type of establishment that tries to fill you up with unlimited fucking breadsticks. So, put on your lobster bib, heat up your butter, and we’ll get started.

What the Word Brand Actually Means

First, we need to start by clarifying what the word brand actually means, how brands work, and how brands influence people’s opinions. We need to start this way; because, if we don’t, many people will fuck it up — and we don’t want that.

Then, once we’ve clarified the meaning and implications of a brand, we can build on it, and have you kicking ass at life. Don’t worry, I won’t drag this shit on too long. We’ve all got important things we need to be doing. This brief discussion is important because we need to ensure everyone is on the same page and understands what we’re talking about. I don’t want to leave anyone behind — not even the slow kids. So, if you had to repeat math class five times, don’t worry, I’ve got you. Besides, everyone knows, math is boring, and we have calculators for dealing with that shit.

So, we’ll start by clarifying the meaning of a brand — very quickly — with respect to companies and products because that’s how people instinctually understand brands. Then, we’ll move on to discussing many specific personal attributes and behaviours you can use to develop an excellent personal brand that attracts people into your work life, social life, and romantic life. We’ll cover things like personal presence, charisma, building trust, and demonstrating both strength and
