Jim Hulse

Jim received his BS in Education with a major in oral communications. He did his post graduate work at Missouri. He was a national champion in debate and oratory. Jim taught public speaking and debate at both the high school and university levels. Many of his students went on to win national titles, and later to become managers and CEOs of some of the best corporations in the world. Jim is extremely proud of those students. Jim has always said, “My real reward is helping others succeed.” For many years he was a business trainer in public speaking and served as a Product Manager, Sales Manager, and Manager of one of the largest corporations in America. He went on to own and operated his own consulting firm directed at helping companies train their employees in communicating effectively. For the past several years he managed a successful company in New Zealand. He returned to the United States in 2008 and now spends his time writing and sharing his experience with others Jim is a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a metal smith and Master-at-Arms on the USS Gunston Hall (LSD 5), an old amphibious ship, during the cold war in the Pacific. He was on operations in Vietnam and steamed off the coast of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crises. Jim loves life and people. He is one with a smile for all and never takes himself too seriously. Jim is a lover of life, and anticipates each new day as an exciting challenge. He has spent his life helping others to think on their feet, keep a positive attitude, and turn every problem into an opportunity. Jim is a person who enjoys public speaking. .

Chapter 1 - Introduction

There have been countless books written on public speaking, and the internet is full of advice. With all the information available, it remains that good speakers are few and far between. This book is a practical guide to success through oral communication. It provides a formula for anyone wishing to make a speech regardless of preparation time. One can take the formula, use it, or expand on it. Public speaking need not, nor should not be difficult once you understand the formula. Public speaking can and should be fun and exciting.

When primal humans first emerged and rose from their knuckles and stood on two hind legs, they were faced with a world of challenges. Many predators were stronger and faster. How they were able to survive has always made interesting speculation.

Anthropologists have multiple theories. Some believe it was the opposable thumb that gave humans the ability to grip weapons such as clubs, and to make and use tools. While others feel this is true, it is the ability of humans to walk on two legs (bipedal) before he really started developing into modern humans. Walking on two legs freed the arms and hands to develop into appendages that could be used for a more constructive purpose than primarily transporting the body.

Anthropologists agree being bipedal and having opposable thumbs were definite advantages. Yet there is one major ingredient missing. The ability to communicate complex thought from one to others. It probably started with basic grunts and gestures within family groups until words were formed. Words were then put together for simple phrases.

The capacity to develop language and communicate complex thought processes gave early man the ability to form small cooperating groups of hunters and gatherers. Working as a group, gave humans the ability to bring down much larger and stronger game. Later, it gave them the ability to plant and harvest communal crops; reducing the need to be nomadic. Now they could build and develop a culture in one location. Communities began to form. Humans could teach and train others, and pass information from generation to generation. Every new generation would build on the knowledge of the last. Eventually, entire cities were formed. New societies were organized with laws and government. Great cooperative feats were achieved. We can track man through the ages from standardizing early stone tools, to the building of the pyramids, to the digital age; launching of satellites that can transfer ideas and information anywhere in the world at the speed of light. What a miracle! We are now capable of putting complete libraries on a micro-chip, put a man on the moon, and unfortunately make war with devastating results.

Things certainly have changed from primal humans once mankind began to develop from grunts and gestures to forming words and sentences. The capacity of the brain to use logical thought processes drastically increased with the languages. Mankind’s brain cavity grew larger. No longer is the leader of a group necessarily the strongest, fastest, or fiercest. With modern man the leader of the group is usually the man or woman who has the ability to communicate and motivate others as an effective unit. That person could be President of the United States, Governor, Mayor, or Chief Executive Officer. That person may be the teacher in the classroom. A great teacher does not disseminate information on its own. A great teacher has the ability to motivate and challenge students to strive toward a higher plateau of learning. The classroom becomes a place of adventure; filled with new ideas and excitement.

Imagine if you will, a large audience looking for guidance and leadership. They are waiting for someone who can motivate them and lay out a decisive course of action. The audience could be a group of work associates that are in need of someone to solidify their hopes and ambitions. They desire someone who can motivate and organize them into a cohesive, collective force. Due to your knowledge and ability to speak, you have been selected as that person. Your audience is leaning forward in their chairs and they are in total support. You step up before the group with
