THE MERCANTILIST THOUGHT

MERCANTILISM, WHICH EXTENDED APPROXIMATELY BETWEEN 1500 AND 1750, COVERED FROM THE MEDIEVAL DECOMPOSITION TO THE STAGE OF EXPANSION OF TRADE AND THE MARKET ECONOMY. COINCIDES WITH ABSOLUTISM AND COLONIAL EXPANSION IN OVERSEAS.
Mercantilism is not strictly a school of thought. But its authors were influential people in their time (ministers, lawyers, statesmen, and clergy). That is why mercantilist ideas try to respond to sectoral and specific problems. They are not, strictly speaking, a set of ordered theories, nor do they provide answers to economic problems as a whole.
They try to resolve current situations but they always reflect conflicts of interest. For them, the objective of economic activity is to increase the wealth of the Nation. THEY WONDER BY WHAT MEANS TO ENRICH A COUNTRY.
Regardless of the diverse points of view that the mercantilists have, they share a common idea about the State, the Nation and power. The rest are organized from certain basic themes.
Thus, in the first place are the issues of money, related to wealth, prices, interest rate, exchange rate and balance of payments. A second place is occupied by issues related to population, industry and work.

    The Nation and wealth

MERCANTILISM OPENLY CONTRAST WITH MEDIEVAL IDEAS. SINCE THE XVI CENTURY, POLITICS IS SEPARATED FROM RELIGION, THE ECONOMY OF JUSTICE AND THE BUSINESS OF MORALITY

The Nation: the prince and absolutism

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 16th CENTURY, WITH THE WORK OF MAQUIAVELO, A NEW THEORY OF THE STATE ARISES, considered as a superior power.

FOR MAQUIAVELO, STATES ARE BORN OF VIOLENCE AND MANY TIMES THEY ARE MAINTAINED THANKS TO IT

A State that has an effective policy is opposed to the existing concept of morality and to the Church.

Quote Machiavelli ... Being as they are, men will use their freedom to act against the interests of the State and this will lead to social chaos and the dissolution of the Nation. To avoid this, the Prince must guarantee the prosperity of a city, first by conquering power and then by keeping and increasing it.

THE STATE IS ABOVE ANYONE. THE PURPOSES JUSTIFY THE MEANS USED. IN THIS WAY, LAY THE FOUNDATIONS OF ABSOLUTISM
