My Daily Ayurveda - Yasmin Kumar
What do we actually know about Ayurveda in this country? If you ask a person on the street, they would probably answer: It has something to do with medicine, alternative medicine. Meditation, yoga, just everything that relaxes is done there.
That's not so far off the mark, but it's not entirely true either. The Ayurvedic teachings, which originated in India, are not to be understood as a medical system, because they are so much more. It is a philosophy of life, a concept that looks at the body, the mind and the universe.
Your guide to a long and healthy life
If we take apart the term Ayurveda
, we get the words ayur
and veda
. Ayur
comes from ayus
and means teaching
or knowledge
. Veda
is translated as life.
So that makes Ayurveda the teaching of life. It is not so much a system of healing as it is a way of life. It acts as a kind of guide, thanks to which a person who follows it has the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. The main focus is to be in harmony with both yourself and the universe until life comes to a peaceful end. But this is only possible if you are always aware of yourself. That is, you should perform all your actions thoughtfully and with fullest consciousness.
Western medicine views the body as a kind of machinery whose parts can be analyzed and treated individually. Ayurvedic teachings convey a completely different approach and view the human body as a unit that must be considered as a whole. In addition, the cultural, social and also spiritual environment plays an important role. All this must be part of the treatment for it to be truly effective. An exact identification of the disease is not necessary for healing. It is not important to give it a name. What matters is to identify it in time and then treat it properly and holistically. So one uses a holistic approach.
The Ayurvedic way of thinking is an integral part of the Indian culture and therefore also very present in the everyday life of the people living there. Should you ever have the opportunity to take a look into an Indian household, you will notice that certain herbs, oils and spices, for example, are not to be missed. There may even be a place specially prepared for meditation. Some families also grow special medicinal herbs themselves, which they use not only to prepare food, but also for external treatment of various ailments. Almost every household has knowledge of Ayurvedic teachings and practices. They are passed down from generation to generation and each family has developed certain methods over time which are not found in the source texts.
Listen to your inner voice
The Ayurvedic teachings convey that one thing should have top priority: the desire to live. According to Ayurvedic understanding, a person can live to be about 100 years old if he wants to and takes care of his body and mind accordingly. If you are always mindful of following a healthy lifestyle and are able to interpret the signals your body sends you and act accordingly, you can preserve your vitality and achieve just that.
After the age of 60, youth is considered to be over. Your goal should therefore be to orient your life in such a way that the following stage of life can also be actively and healthily shaped. Above all, spirituality plays an important role in this. It gives people an inner sense of life that needs to be maintained. If it is weakened, this can have negative effects on life span. After all, the soul is considered the source of life, which is why you should pay special attention to it. Therefore, if you do not maintain contact with your inner self, you will not only lose quality of life, but also time. Psychological suffering quickly affects physical well-being, this is not only taught by Ayurveda. Also in western medicine this aspect is becoming more and more conscious and the importance of mental health plays an increasing role.
If you decide to live your life according to the rules of Ayurveda, you must learn to listen to your inner self. Become aware of the nature of your body and let its signals guide you. Only in this way will you be able to learn what exactly is good for you, both physically and psychologically, and what you should rather stay away from. Our body shows us what it needs when it is not feeling well. It communicates with us, but we often overhear what it is telling us. That's why it's even more important to take time and listen to yourself.
Every person is individual. And just as unique as your personality is, so are the needs of your body. That's why Ayurveda is not a one-size-fits-all guide that everyone can follow. The teachings give instructions for different types. First of all you have to find out which type you belong to in order to be able to apply the teachings correctly and tailored to you as an individual. These types are the so-called doshas, also called functional principles, which we will discuss in detail below.
The Doctrine of the Elements
But in order to understand what it is fundamentally about the doshas, we go into the world of the elements. According to Ayurvedic understanding, there are not only four, but five elements: fire, water, air, earth and ether. They determine the life of all beings that walk the earth. Thus they do not only have influence on us humans, but also on animals, plants and even rocks. The elements were already on earth before the first life came into being, which is why they are determinative and formative. We humans are a reflection of the universe. It forms the macrocosm, while we represent the microcosm.
The five elements are directly related to the five human senses. Fire is linked to our sight, water affects our taste senses and air has an influence on our ability to feel something. The element earth is responsible for our sense of smell and ether for our sense of hearing. All the elements and senses are in turn associated with the doshas already mentioned. Ayurveda teaches that one's well-being is determined by the individual interaction of these elements. Every human being carries them within himself, but the question is, which one dominates? That's what you need to find out, because that's how you can determine which Dosha type you belong to and which Ayurvedic recommendations you can follow. Why is this so important? Because the doshas have an impact on your entire life, because they are anchored in every single one of your cells.
Have you ever wondered why you look the way you do, why you have this personality, why you are attracted to certain things while others make you dislike them, or where your strengths and weaknesses come from? Often these questions are answered as follows: It is partly due to genetics, and partly because certain experiences have shaped you and made you who you are today.
But Ayurveda puts before you a very different explanation. The five elements are responsible. Their individual composition within your body is the reason for your physique, your preferences, your strengths and weaknesses and your overall personality.
The elements are in a very specific relationship to each other, so are the doshas. This relationship must always be maintained. The Ayurvedic teachings explain exactly how this works. If this relationship is disturbed and the balance is lost, Ama occurs and your body falls ill. Ama can be roughly described as waste products
, toxins
or metabolic waste products
. Literally translated, Ama means undigested
or immature
, from which the aforementioned paraphrases result. If Ama accumulates in your body to an increased extent, it will lead to indisposition or even to the outbreak of diseases. The culprit is Agni, the digestive fire.
The understanding of diseases - Agni and Ama
Agni is defined as a cosmic force that works within the body. In short, it determines our well-being and plays a central role in maintaining health. If your individual balance of the elements and thus the doshas gets upset, Agni becomes negatively tuned and your health deteriorates. Therefore, it is especially important to care for and nourish it.
Agni controls, among other things, the digestion. Even in Western medicine it is known how important a well-functioning digestion is for health. All the food you eat must be completely broken down and processed or transported away. If this is not the case, waste products remain in your body and affect Agni. It is deposited in your cells and ama is created. Consequently, your well-being is significantly impaired, which can result in further negative consequences. Your vital energy decreases, you lose strength, mental resilience and your lifespan shortens, to name just a few examples.
Those who have completely lost contact with their inner self and do not pay attention to regularly listen to themselves will only notice the signals that their own body sends much too late. If the digestive fire goes out, death is just around the corner. For this reason, Agni is often called the fire of life.
But Agni is not only responsible for the complete digestion of your food. In everyday life, you are exposed to a lot of external influences that your organism has to convert into something of your own body. For example, another task of this fire is to transport out toxins that have accumulated in your body due to pollutants from the environment or due to stress. The psyche also has a significant influence. You have had an argument with a good friend that has had a lasting effect on you, a customer at work has caused you a lot of trouble or you have even lost a loved one? All of this weighs on your stomach just as much as hard to digest food, or even more so. If Agni is weakened due to mental stress, your body will not be able to fully digest even easily digestible food. So it is necessary to fight the problem at the source.
If you always give your inner fire the attention it needs, you will be gifted with comprehensive well-being. You feel fit, healthy and full of energy. Your mind is alert and your complexion appears fresh and radiant. Thus Agni affects your entire body.
If ama nevertheless develops, a look into the intestine is necessary in order to understand the processes that are now taking place. Among other things, fermentations take place that lead to the formation of alcohols, for example. Your intestine now offers the perfect place for germs to settle and viruses, bacteria and fungi have an easy game. You feel weak, have no appetite and find it particularly difficult
