About this ebook

The invasion of the Dorians ushered in a new age of Greek civilization. The Dorians were an Indo-European people, nomads and warriors, who spoke Greek. With his arrival, the so-called "Dark Age" of Greek history begins. Homer is the only relevant figure from this period; However, in this stage the Polis, a distinctive form of political organization of the following age, classical Greece, will be born. The Dark Age is dominated by mythical thought, linked to tales of sovereignty, according to which the "divine king" is the creator of both the social and natural order. In the classical age, when the mythical story is left behind, nature considered in itself appears as a problem. The first scientists, the Ionic physicists, Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, endowed the mythical representations in a secular, non-religious way. To work on these issues we have summarized the essentials of "On the crisis of mythical thought and the process of secularization", by Edith Elorza.

ON THE CRISIS OF MYTHICAL THOUGHT AND THE PROCESS OF SECULARIZATION

The invasion of the Dorians ushered in a new age of Greek civilization.

The Dorians were an Indo-European people, nomads and warriors, who spoke Greek.

With his arrival, the so-called Dark Age of Greek history begins. Homer is the only relevant figure from this period; However, in this stage the Polis, a distinctive form of political organization of the following age, classical Greece, will be born.

The Dark Age is dominated by mythical thought, linked to tales of sovereignty, according to which the divine king is the creator of both the social and natural order.

In the classical age, when the mythical story is left behind, nature considered in itself appears as a problem. The first scientists, the Ionic physicists, Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, endowed the mythical representations in a secular, non-religious way.

It can be affirmed that the theme of Ionic physics (the genesis and the order of the world) is the same as in mythical thought; what is different is the way of treating it.

These Ionian thinkers wondered about the arche or constitutive principle of nature, origin and law that governs the natural order. Each of these thinkers chose some element (air, earth, water or fire), as a principle.

The notion of element is due to the thinker Empedocles of Agrigento: the element is taken from nature, but is conceived abstractly, as a constitutive principle of being.

Anaxagoras argued that both our body and the different solid and liquid substances are composed of small similar seeds, which he called homeomeries.

Therefore, each thing, despite its different appearance, has a common component with the others.

Anaxagoras called Nous to the substance that sets others in motion.

The Nous is the purest substance among all, the simplest and the only one that does not mix with all of them: it always remains the same as itself and moves by itself. The Nous is somewhat identical, which remains behind the changes.

For Heraclitus, the principle is fire.

Everything flows; nature is a continual change. Fire is in perpetual motion, as are the changing sensations of our mind.

But fire is also the most integral, the least miscible
