THE NEW AGE OF INEQUALITIES
CHAPTER 1 THE TWO SUFFERINGS
1. The opaque society
The two speeches
There are currently two very different speeches when talking about FRENCH SOCIETY: one, which celebrates the good health of the economy and the other, which deplores the widening of the social divide.
THE FIRST argues that France has a healthy economy, well armed in the face of international competition; in general terms, IT IS THE SPEECH OF THE EXPERTS
AND THE RULERS.
As for the SECOND SPEECH, it is a ghost of the same ruling class that feels increasingly separated from the rest of the nation. Although the competitiveness and profitability of French companies are undeniable, it is not possible to stop there. It is the speech that maintains that EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL EXCEPT UNEMPLOYMENT
.
But society must be understood precisely here, starting from its weakest link.
THE AVERAGES OF INCOME DO NOT MATTER AS MUCH AS THEIR DISPERSION AND DISTRIBUTION
It is that all the indicators misrepresent the phenomena of precariousness, growing insecurity, and the weakening of the social bond. In this sense, it can be said that THE DIFFERENT READINGS OF FRENCH SOCIETY ARE ALREADY IN THEMSELVES A SYMPTOM OF THE FRACTURES THAT CROSS IT.
The ambiguous return of the social
But conversely, it is not enough to talk about the fracture
calling for a new social pact
to overcome the emergency or a reduction of the fracture
, for things to move forward.
Politics and good feelings
First of all, there is a perverse confusion between politics and good feelings. The problem is no longer judging political actions, but indifference.
The authors believe that the right-left opposition corresponded to an ideological confrontation and projects of a different society.
THE OLD PROGRESSISM-CONSERVATIVE OPPOSITION WAS REPLACED BY THAT OF HONEST AND CORRUPT POLITICIANS, PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL
AND CINICS ACCOMMODATED IN POWER.
In the speeches of the political leadership and social communicators good feelings
prevail. There is no longer talk of taxes or social cost or social policies.
The taste for show politics
Second, the social question entered the politics of entertainment, which hides a true will for change.
POLITICAL ACTIONS ARE CONTENTED WITH MULTIPLYING ADVERTISING EFFECTS. We are witnessing a perversion of the true political will degraded into mere good will
.
The new Manichaeism
But perhaps the simplification of problems is the obstacle to understanding the changes in society.
Social exclusion, treated as: long-term unemployment or new poverty or the homeless; He called - through the politicians - for the mobilization of energies and polarization and ended up imposing compassion. Social dynamics cannot be reduced to those who are inside
and those who are outside
, although it constitutes the main problem of our time.
EXCLUSION IS THE RESULT OF A PROCESS, NOT A GIVEN SOCIAL STATUS. You cannot talk about it without modifying the rules of the game for
