Ragnar’s Story
Introduction
Our story begins to unfold inside the home of Mary Joyner, a kindhearted young lady with a love for animals, especially her two foster dogs.
One of these dogs is a young Doberman Pinscher. He is very smart and is the protector of his family. He puts on airs and struts around all gruff, buff, and tough, but under that sleek physique lies the heart of a teddy bear, a tender heart. Mary brought him into her home when he was a year old and calls him Doby.
The other is a Pyrenean Mountain Dog that she brought into her home when he was a small puppy. He is very sensitive in many ways. He is kind, considerate, thoughtful, and eager to help anyone. It is his desire to make others’ lives better if it is in his power to do so. Mary calls him Great but better known by Doby as EAT. Even though he loves his family dearly and has from the first day with them, which was about two years ago, EAT always seems to get a longing feeling for something. He just doesn’t quite understand what it is.
Now for those who do not know what a foster dog is, let me explain. A foster dog is one that has been rescued from various situations and taken in by a local rescue agency. The agency has the dog checked out by an animal doctor called a veterinarian.
The dog is then given vaccination shots, microchipped, treated for any other medical needs it may have, and returned to the agency. The agency has a list of people, possibly like you, who have applied to become foster parents. The dog is then placed into the care of a temporary foster home. Kind, loving people feed, water, attend to its medical and emotional needs, and even potty train it if necessary. Foster parents take care of the dog until someone wishes to adopt it and give it a permanent home.
Chapter 1
The Hope Chest—The Beginning of a New Life
As Doby was walking into the room where EAT was sleeping, he noticed EAT was having another one of his bad dreams. EAT had bad dreams quite often, and Doby was very concerned about him. Doby gently rubbed EAT’s head and whispered, Shhh, it’s okay, little brother, it’s okay.
After EAT calmed down and quit rustling in his sleep, Doby said in a loud voice, Wake up, EAT! It’s time for breakfast. You know Mom won’t feed me unless you are ready for breakfast too! I don’t know why she thinks that there is something so special about you. I see nothing special!
Doby goes on to chant,
"EAT, EAT…smell my feet
Found along a vacant street
Left by someone we don’t know
You don’t belong here…I wish you would go."
Why are you so mean to me, Doby?
asked EAT. When Mom brought me home from the veterinarian hospital, I thought you liked me. You were so big and brave, my big brother, I looked up to and admired you. We were always running around together. Well, I was much smaller than you were then, so I was running a bit behind you. We were always playing or doing something together. Remember the time when we were in the creek, and you ducked me under the water and said something, then pulled me right back up and hugged me. I still don’t know what you said, but I will never forget that time. We eat together and sleep in the same room, you are my best friend and a great brother, I love you! So why after all this time have you started being mean to me with that chant?
You were just a baby when Mom brought you home from the hospital,
said Doby. "It was fun to have a ‘little’ brother to push around. You are bigger than I am…now. Besides, maybe it is because everything was just fine until you came here. Mom loved me and only me! She calls you great. There’s nothing great about you."
Doby continued muttering…
EAT, EAT…smell my feet…
Just then, they hear Mary’s voice ring out from the kitchen. Doby, Great, come and get your breakfast. I have to leave for school and work.
Doby and EAT took off running for the kitchen to devour the delicious meal that Mom makes. They cleaned their dish and received their mommy lovin’s
before Mary left for the day. As Mary was walking out the door, she stopped and turned around like she always did and said, Now you boys behave yourselves, and stay out of trouble. Mommy will be home later tonight.
When she was out, Mary always left the TV on for her boys to watch while they were inside. It helped keep them entertained and out of trouble. Mary usually left the TV on the educational channel.
As Doby and EAT were just lying around watching TV, EAT started thinking. Why do you always call me EAT?
inquired EAT.
Doby replied, "When Mom went to pick you up at the hospital, the doctor told her that you were ‘one lucky little guy.’ He said if those people had not had found you when they did, you never would have made it and that it is a miracle you survived. The nurse packed up all your stuff and gave it to Mom, saying that among the belongings are your once-fancy collar that is tattered and torn but was still intact. She said that it appeared that the collar had been caught on something and nearly ripped apart, but it was well made and had a very tricky clasp. In examining the collar, they concluded that you must belong to someone special. Even though your picture and description was put on several Lost and Found pet sites and bulletin boards, they could not find your family. She keeps what they gave her in a little cedar box in her room. She calls it your hope chest. There was a tag with your name on it, but the only thing I can really remember it saying was EAT.
I call you EAT because there is no way on the face of this earth I’m going to call you Great like Mom does,
said Doby.
Please, Doby! Could you help me find my hope chest so I can see it?
pleaded EAT.
"Why should I? What have you ever done for me? You’ve been a pain in my side ever since you got here, taking all of
