ONE of my lecturers told us we shouldn’t rely on hope to get us through difficult times because it creates a false sense of security. I got it but I just can’t accept the idea that life without hope is better. So many stories in this edition show why it’s important.

Victoria Beckham’s don’t-give-up attitude helped her business succeed (page 10). Bruce Willis’ family hope their time together will help him to thrive despite his health problems (page 18).

Zephany Nurse’s faith that love would heal wounds and time would build bonds resulted in her unconventionally blended family being present at her wedding (page 14).

David Attenborough’s hope for a saved future keeps him going on adventures even as he nears his 100th birthday (page 80). And Rupert Murdoch’s belief in love made him propose for the fifth time at the age of 92 (page 86).
