About this ebook
MIRACLE WORKER provides a dynamic look at the way the average person tackles their presenting problems: aches, pains and much worse. We can become masters of our own body and move into a pain-free healthier existence away from the problems that plague us. Within a world that is ruled by medical science and big pharma, where medicine and tablets are the answer, Michelle takes the reader through a journey of discovery: the discovery that the solution to these problems are seated within the very mind of the patients, not the packet of pills they have in their drawer.
From a structured look at the history of Osteopathy, to an evaluation of current medical practice, this book aims to educate those curious to regain control over their health and move into an enlightened way of thinking. Chapters on alternative practices, crystals, Osteopathic techniques and Michelle’s own experience, take you through the same process an expert Osteopath would use to evaluate and alleviate your problems – promoting a healthier, changed lifestyle. Each section is illustrated with testimonials.

INTRODUCTION
WHY SHOULD I READ THIS BOOK?
Using the principles outlined in this book, I believe you can transform not just your health, but your life too. No doubt you have already been to doctors, consultants or therapists, and have read books and performed exercises, but that hasn’t been enough, and you still seek answers.
The concepts and insights I share are based on years of my own experience and study. As an enlightened Osteopath, I have worked with thousands of patients from two days old to ninety-three years old, over more than twenty-three years, and believe this book provides the missing link between pain and being free of it.
Along with an insight into my profession, and how the principles of Osteopathy are more important to our overall health than simply ‘clicking joints’ to eradicate pain, in the pages of the book you will discover the root causes of disease and suffering, the factors contributing to your overall health and well-being and how your thoughts, habits and beliefs influence your healing ability. Along the way, you will learn practical strategies for addressing the contributing factors for your suffering and pain. This book will share some of my own patients’ stories and testimonials; from the parents of newborn babies, through to children, teenagers, adults, antenatal, post-natal, breast feeding women, business owners, sports men, women and the elderly, across a whole host of symptoms. Over seventy-five testimonials verified and approved since 2002.
I take a committed and powerful stand based on my philosophy, core values and vision to empower more people to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing. It is my purpose and mission to reach more people with the gifts for you to be healthy and happy, speak my truth and share the scope of Osteopathy from my practice.
For more than two decades, I have encouraged people to take responsibility and ownership of their pain and suffering. As an Osteopath and Cranial Osteopath, I can diagnose and screen for pathology using medical tests, and have the unique ability to detect inflammation, retained injury and restriction in the body by using my hands. Using techniques such as massage, articulation, stretching and craniosacral osteopathy to treat the cause of the suffering, connecting with energy, forming a channel for healing. Most of all, achieving what some would describe as miraculous
and magic
.
I address patient’s beliefs and attitudes, starting the healing process from the roots and laying the foundations for inner healing on all levels. Working alongside the medical profession, receiving recommendations from doctors, surgeons, midwifes, health visitors, breast-feeding counsellors, physiotherapists and dentists. I show you how the healing of the majority of symptoms, from head to toe, can be facilitated by accessing the tremendous innate ability of the body to self-repair.
The content of the book is threaded together by relinquishing fear and doing what I know to be the best approach to having health and happiness. A large part of this is to stop identifying with the label Osteopath. My identity as an Osteopath, and its practise, is merely an experience or point of attention within an infinite stream of consciousness. It’s time to break down barriers and speak from the heart.
Why should I not read this book?
This book is not for you if you rely on the gold standard randomised control trials as evidence for all of the content. The book contains both evidence and non-evidence. Do not read this book if you are easily offended. There are elements of this book which lend themselves to subjects such as quantum physics and energy-based medicine and even conspiracy theory or critical thinking. If you are not open and respectful of other points of view, you may not appreciate parts of this book.
Do not believe everything I write, for this book is my truth based upon my perception, understanding, experiences and conditioning. Do not read this book if you want the absolute truth because what I present is my truth as the Rebel Osteopath.
Warning: the content may cause offence to some of my colleagues, patients and the medical profession.

A BEGINNING: THE HISTORY
OF OSTEOPATHY
Originating in the late 1800’s, when a country doctor had no access to modern drugs, X-rays or other hospital tests, local chemists sold little more than remedies based on herbs and folklore (which were often toxic); there were no anesthetics with surgery and patients died from infections. Osteopathy has a robust provenance.
Osteopathy was founded by Dr Andrew Taylor Still in 1874 in a small mid-west American town, Kirksville, Missouri. His discovery: in order to achieve the highest possible form of health, all parts of the body should work together harmoniously. His goal: to restore the body to optimum health with minimal surgery and medicine, influenced in part by the realisation that medical treatments of that time were largely ineffective. Dr Still felt there was a better way of healing the sick, and began to apply physical treatment to patients which he called ‘Osteopathy’ (The origin of the word is from the Greek for bone (osteon) and suffering (pathos). Over time he treated patients with a wide range of conditions from dysentery, pneumonia, tuberculosis and typhoid fever to musculoskeletal pain.
Dr Still didn’t specify what Osteopaths may or may not be able to palpate, or what conditions Osteopathy may help, but gave a philosophy, and set up principles, that enabled them to guide the body towards health. In Osteopathic treatment the aim is to apply these principles, to use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology along with their highly developed palpatory skills, clinical experience and intuition to assist patients. Osteopaths assist the body to find the best state of health it can at a given moment in time.
In 1892 Still started a school in Kirksville, Missouri, for the teaching of Osteopathy; it was from these small beginnings Osteopathy was brought to the United Kingdom. In 1913, one of Still’s early students, John Martin Littlejohn, returned to London to practise, with the aim of setting up a standard of osteopathic science, to show the public what the science is and to clinically demonstrate its efficiency. He established the first osteopathic school in the country, the British School of Osteopathy, in 1917, and served as Dean of the School for forty years. Over time other schools and colleges followed.
Since those early days Osteopathy has evolved significantly, informed by experience and research, to become an internationally practiced profession, recognised by the World Health Organisation and other international bodies. In 1993 Osteopathy became the first major complementary health care profession to be accorded statutory recognition under the 1993 Osteopaths Act. Osteopaths are regulated by The General Osteopathic Council.
The elephant in the room: a history of medicine
Ty Bollinger, author of The Truth About Cancer and Baxter Dimitri in News Punch present that Western medicine started out with use of plants and herbs to heal wounds and, through the technological advances of the present day, the practise of medicine shifted from prescientific holistic approaches to modern, scientifically supported explanations of disease. As the practise of medicine became thoroughly grounded in science, which seeks unified explanations for diseases, more and more pharmaceutical drugs were used as medicine. But the industry as we understand it today really has its origins in the second half of the 19th century.
A big portion of educating people about the truth is exposing the lies about the history of modern medicine and the history of treatments. This is not shared with the intention to hurt anybody or mislead, but rather create a path of thought and contemplation.
Over a century ago there were the Carnegie and the Rockefeller Foundations who engineered the curriculum in medical schools through their grants and donations. They decided they would reform medical education in America. At the time of the late 1800s, early 1900s, 20th century medical schools taught a lot of different things. There were homeopathic medical schools, naturopathic schools and eclectic herbal-type medicine schools. The Rockefellar and Carnegie Foundations were interested in establishing the one way. How would they do that? Well they would create a medical monopoly by eliminating all competition to patent petrochemical medical education. They created a medical monopoly in the name of the Flexner Report of 1910 and the basis of the report was to target and shut down the larger respected natural health colleges because they were not pushing enough chemical drugs through these two companies. John D. Rockefeller bought a German pharmaceutical company that would later assist Hitler to implement his eugenics-based vision by manufacturing chemicals and poisons for war.
Carnegie and Rockefellar showered hundreds of millions of dollars on the medical schools that were teaching drug-intensive medicine and by way of donating so much money their staff became appointed to the Board of Directors. Once that was in place, the curriculum of the universities, and the teaching centres swung completely in the direction of the pharmaceutical drugs and it has remained that way ever since.
Predictably, the schools that had the financing churned out the better doctors. By 1925, over 10,000 herbalists were out of business. By 1940, over 1500 chiropractors would be prosecuted for practising quakery. The twenty-two homeopathic medical schools that flourished in the 1900s dwindled down to just two by 1923. By 1950, all the schools teaching homeopathy were closed.
In the end, if a physician did not graduate from a Flexnor-approved medical school and receive an MD degree, he or she could not find a job anywhere. This is why today medical doctors are so heavily biased towards synthetic drug therapy and know little about nutrition.
The whole medical system has been skewed in the direction of pharmaceutical drugs which can be patented and produce great profits for the producers. There is the realisation that some people would have the view that the medical profession is really a lapdog of the pharmaceutical industry and most of the doctors have no idea that’s the case. They do not understand the history. The Pharmaceutical industry is actually a deliberate decision by a handful of people to define disease as a marketplace and build what has now become the largest investment industry. Modern medicine is a business and just like any business the goal is to grow this business and also eliminate competition and maintain the monopoly.
The only thing taught in medical school is how to prescribe drugs. Hours and hours and hours of study on how to use patented medicine. They do not get paid to educate people. They get paid to write prescriptions. Generalising, of course, and not all general practitioners (GPs) solely write prescriptions; but if you ask them what vitamins and supplements they would suggest to support my health, would they give advice? Would they advise how to breathe correctly by using your diaphragm? Can a GP educate you about something they know nothing about? A doctor could be said to be brainwashed when he leaves medical school because the medical school has too much subsidisation by the professors who are being paid by the drug companies. As a result, medicine is not health care and is more likened to sick care intervention. The leading cause of death is from prescribed drugs. A good example is those patients who took Vioxx, the arthritis drug. It may have caused approximately 140,000 heart attacks and resulted in an estimated 60,000 deaths.
Crisis intervention such as emergency care can be viewed differently and is life saving and the technology in this area has accelerated tremendously.
I do not intend to take the higher ground nor offend GP’s as I respect their level of care for their patients and have good working relationships with many local medics. This is a view point.
I will move swiftly on.
So, what do Osteopaths treat?
Almost any symptom can improve because it is a sign of dysfunction in the body and Osteopaths are highly trained to detect, diagnose and aid recovery of these dysfunctions. However, it is important to point out that an Osteopath will not make claims to resolve or cure because it is very subjective to the patient accepting and receiving the gift of treatment and invoking a healing response dictated by the body and mind of that patient.
There are natural and effective ways to heal, feel more comfortable and even resolve suffering. As alluded to previously, I will share testimonials and findings from my own experience, in order to divulge some of the health problems, pain or ‘experiences of suffering’ held by my patients. The examples presented in this book are from my own experiences and reveal some of the typical symptoms that patients report, most of which I have been unable to share on my website or in my clinic room, without being reported to the Osteopathy Regulatory body by the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA).
Words such as colic, anxiety, panic attacks, behaviour problems, reflux, insomnia, autism, period pain, had to be removed or adapted, because one cannot persuade or mislead members of the public to attend a consultation through the use of words, without it being evidence-based practice. The Committee of Advertising Practices (CAP) is the sister organisation of the ASA and is responsible for writing the Advertising Codes. They have supplied Osteopaths with a list of words that can be used in advertising and any other words have to be omitted despite a patient reporting their story.
On the one hand Osteopaths have strived for recognition from the medical system and the profession has worked tirelessly to achieve the status of Allied Health Practitioners and First Contact Practitioners whilst on the other hand this has been at the detriment of the heritage of Osteopathy by restricting and limiting patient choice and accessibility to a list of conditions set by CAP codes.
Based on evidence submitted to CAP prior to November 2016, the ASA and CAP accept that Osteopaths can claim to treat the following:
Arthritic pain
Circulatory problems
Cramp
Digestion problems
Fibromyalgia
Frozen shoulder/shoulder and elbow pain/tennis elbow arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, but not isolated occurrences.
Headache arising from the neck
Joint pains
Joint pains including the hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis as an adjunct to core OA treatments and exercise.
General, acute & chronic backache, back pain (not arising from injury or accident)
Generalised aches and pains
Lumbago
Migraine prevention
Minor sports injuries
Muscle spasms
Neuralgia
Tension and inability to relax
Rheumatic pain
Sciatica
Uncomplicated mechanical neck pain (as opposed to neck pain following injury i.e. whiplash)
There is a broad divide between Osteopaths who see themselves as an alternative to modern medicine, and those who consider their role as limited to helping patients with mostly musculoskeletal disorders; they deal with these in a specific way which is essentially compatible with recognised medical thinking and perhaps restricted to the list of ailments as listed by CAP.
Under the terms of the Osteopaths Act 1993, unless you are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, you cannot use the title Osteopath nor claim to be an Osteopath. After several years of registration, some very experienced Osteopaths withdrew their registration and forfeited their title as Osteopath when they found that the limitations of statutory regulation were too restrictive for the patients they see. They continue to provide patients with the same quality of Osteopathic care, but no longer use the title ‘Osteopath’. The Osteopaths Act 1993 does not restrict osteopathic techniques or osteopathic care so these practitioners continue to work. This is a true blessing for the general public as many of these practitioners are truly amazing
